What does it feel like to play a guitar?

Picking one up always feels natural, always feels right, always
makes me buzz with anticipation.

Turning on the amplifier and hearing it hum is like a promise of
answered questions, but once I turn the volume on the guitar up and
I hear the backdrop humming of the natural "default sounds" of the
instrument there is a sensation like a deep breath through my body..
one large inhale of wonderful fresh air.. one that stays inside me
to continually grow larger and deeper in spectrum and taste.

The first note.

I don't hear it before I play it, and I never know what it is before
it is sounding. I just can't decide before I am there. But picking
it off is a sigh of relief.. a return to, or emergence into, a
fuller reality. The first sound always makes my muscles release
tension from places I never knew there was tension, it just feels
right.

When jamming I go blind. I literally can't see anything when a good
jam is going, nothing but a sort of fuzzy black place where there
are sounds hanging about suggesting themselves. The sounds sort of
have shapes, something like fuzzy hovering lights that pulse and
move about..though not quite. I see what I am playing, as well as a
little of what I have played, and there is a raggedy and shifting
line of sounds that seem to compete for placement on the fretboard.
There is a beat, but I have no idea how that comes about. It's just
a matter of friendly notes playing when they feel they suit the
progress. So far I haven't heard a single sound that comes from
offstage when playing, not boos nor cheers not my cellphone or a
car. Nothing but the band is audible.

That's how it feels to me, that's only way I know how to do it.
I am no guitar god but I like playing, a lot.
