To your former high school teacher who's husband just died? (Yes, a teacher. But she's also a very good friend to me)

A few years ago, her son killed himself. I can't believe all this can happen to one person.

As you know, nothing you can say will make the situation any different. She also knows this so will appreciate whatever words you offer. It will be heartfelt which she will feel so just say whatever feels right for you to say at the time- even if it is just to say you dont know what to say and just offer a hug

Just ask her if there is anything that you can do for her; and 'be' there for her. Even if just in silence; as our physical company if often times of the most comfort..
Let her know you are always available if she needs to talk.
