The 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s players wouldn't be able to stand up to the players of today, as they have gotten a lot bigger and stronger since then.

In the early 1980s, Don Coryell revolutionized the way offensive football is played, particularly in the passing game, breaking many records in terms of yardage and points. As a result, the 1984 Bears came up with a "46" defense that countered this that was heavy on rushing the quarterback with blitzes to disrupt him, while covering the receivers with tight man-to-man.

To counter the "46" defense, however, Bill Walsh, head coach of the 49ers, created the "West Coast" Offense that relied on quick precision in the passing game to counter the blitzes. This offense quickly rendered the Bears irrelevant and dominated football for the next decade, as the 49ers went on to win 4 more championships with it, not to mention championships by other teams utilizing the same type of offense.

The heavily talented 1992/1993 Dallas Cowboys were a challenge to these 49ers in the early 1990s, but once the 49ers got Deion Sanders on defense, then even the Cowboys couldn't stop them.

As a result, the 13-3 1994 49ers, led by hall of famer Steve Young (who supplanted Joe Montana a few years earlier) and his then-record setting 112.8 passer rating, blew opponents away by an average margin of 20 points per victory, culminating in a 38-28 victory over the Cowboys in the NFC Championship (that wasn't even that close), and a 49-26 Super Bowl victory in which he threw for 6 touchdown passes.

This is why I would consider the 1994 San Fransisco 49ers as the greatest team of all time.

The 46 defense was designed to disrupt both the running game and passing game of teams that relied on play action off the run and pocket passing QBs that took 5-7 step drops as the receivers spread the field (Don Coryell's system).

The West Coast offense, with the quick 3 step drops and precision horizontal passing (as opposed to vertical), made all this null and void. Granted, the Bears had talent on D, but the system would have needed an overhaul to keep up with the rapidly changing offensive landscape that took place throughout the 80's.

This could all go by the wayside in the not to distant future. Football is under siege. The NFL may be playing touch football in 10 years. Save your "best of" recordings--in a safe place.

Yeah, they need to relax the rules on QB hits, but it's like in Congress, rules are made because they make money.

Either way, the NFL is as strong as its ever been.

Yeah, they changed a lot in revolutionizing the game. A precursor to Walsh's West Coast offense actually.

@ leon and hilman The west coast offense was not made in the west coast. It was made in Cinn. by guest who was the owner and who was the one of the coaches.

The term has been used very loosely over the years, but you're right in that Walsh's version was formalized in an infancy stage under Paul Brown's tutelage of Bill in Cincy.
