I am a accountant and working temp as I lost my job in oct 2007. I showing the following jobs on my chronoligical resume

contract work 2008-- present
job 1 2006-2007 1 yr nonprofit have personnel as reference only
job 2 1993-2006 13 yrs nonprofit have references
job 3 1987-1993 6 yrs for profit job closed letter of reference
job 4 1984-1987 3 yrs for profit job relocated 1 reference

1)Do I need to show every job on my resume from when I graduated college in 1979 Can I leave this specific job from 1984 to 1987 off my resume especially since it was a for profit job and has little to do with the nonprofit accounting jobs I am applying for.

2)Also If I leave this job off my resume what do I say if I am asked for reference and give them a reference from a job not on my resume.

I apply for jobs asking for 3-10 yrs experience and I dont want to show my age of 56. I just want to get the interview and I can do the rest as i am a good talker

They usually say on the application how many years they want.
I'd go for the most relevant to what you're applying for, eg: when i applied for my first nursing post i documented the recent jobs related to caring and not my teenage waitressing jobs.

I would list all my jobs, experience counts for everything.

Take it from somebody close to your era. I had mine done professionally and this is what they recommended.
1. Employers don't like to see a long list of employment history.( It shows that you can't stay in one place for any given length of time).
2.I would combine "Job 1" with present. (Job 1 2006 to present-contract work references available on request.
3. I would stop at your "Job 3" and finish it there.
-All three combined have over 20 years stable work history.
-Note: No reference to your age was made, but there is 20 yrs of work history let them do the math.
-Always offer " References available on request"
Last but not least try something like this: "I look forward to discussing this further with you in a personal interview at your most convenient time."
NO MORE THAN 2 PAGES!!

Last 3 jobs. I look at resumes often. Don't need more than that. When you're in interview you can elaborate if key questions come up for special qualifications from the others.

I agree, last 3 jobs should do. They can ask you more about earlier jobs in the interview. The CV is just to get their interest.
