The media would rather report on big brother than the genocide occurring in darfur (in africa) at the moment. If the same thing were happening in a western country it would be splashed all over the front page of every newspaper. Though the fact they report on such trivial issues instead of important issues affecting africans is really a reflection of the public's inability to empathise with non-caucasian people. If we see whites on the telly in a dangerous situation it really strikes a chord with us, opposed to images of deprived africans in the savannah fleeing their country by foot because they know they'll be massacred if they don't. When people see things like that they think 'oh isn't that awful' and go on eating their dinner and forget about it. A classic example of under-reporting was on the rwandan genocide in 1994 when over half a million people were slaughtered. Many of those deaths could have been prevented if the world did not turn a blind eye to what was happening and aid was sent.

If the media doesnt report it.. it isnt new.. the media only report things that are NEW. If its done, they move on..

what do you mean? the media can actually follow the developments- these issues are ongoing and the media need to keep the public updated if it is to be ingrained in their minds.

Aye in a perfect world that would happen, but i generally find that the people who actually care about these issues and would do something about it find out what is going on and try to raise the profile of the crisis.

You generally find that the media doesnt stop reporting the issus they just become harder to find, eg 3 pages in rather than on the front page.

Like everything else in this world the media is driven by money and everything has a shelf life, once it gets out dated then they dont sell papers and dont make money.

Another point to note is that there is so much going on in the world both nationally and worldwide that there is not enough column inches or air time to report everything that is going on.

you mentioned Rowanda, as far as i know Clinton chose to ignore what was going on there and effectively turn the worlds attension away from it. Maybe your beef should be with the politicians rather than the media? BTW Clinton said that not going into Rowanda was one of his biggest regrets

another person bandying about the word racist when theres another explenation to it

the media comment on big brother and i find, fashion tips because it sells papers to the 'new lady' who keeps an eye on social levels and looks good all year round! (or so she thinks )

hmmm, well, let's see. When 9/11 occurred the death toll was a few thousand. The Rwandan genocide resulted in a minimum of half a million deaths. Most people haven't heard of the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Americans are predominantly white, Africans predominantly black. I think that proves my point. And don't patronise me.

What is being reported on is a reflection of society's collective mindset- prejudices included. But the media are such a powerful influence on the way we think they should take responsibility and report on things that matter instead of feeding our petty predelictions.

depends on the media you choose The mainstream is that they dont wanna see people murdered and starving when they are eating thier dinner, they would rather hear about what minor celebs are doing to make a twat of themselves. The answer is simple. Switch off mainstream media. Dont buy crappy newspapers and magazines.
