Yeh I think it was as high as 36,000 at one point in the 19th century! I don't know any Shetlanders myself, but Viking history interests me a fair bit! Well I hope no one leaves the union, I for one think most Scottish people have enriched the UK ,technologically, politically and culturally!!

Sad to say though there is a lot of regionalism/nationalism in the UK now. People are a lot less proud of the union due to its imperialistic past. Without the union though the world would be in the dark ages! If we did disolve our 300 year union I think we would regret it later!

You'd suffer terribly from Immigration, half the Scots I know (including myself) have said they would move out if Scotland becomes independant.

Well in England we have welcomed one million Scottish so far, and I'm sure most English would welcome more than that. Probably because most Scottish, Welsh and Irish people share simular values to the average English person and fit in well in England. I for one don't have any problem with Scottish people moving to England, I would welcome it. The sad thing in terms of the union is most English people get on well with the Scottish folk, and visa versa. Most of the Scottish people i know have been warm and friendly. Its a minority that stir up trouble with their nationalism!

Would you move because you don't see a future for Scotland without the union? or because you would be under a SNP government with Alex Salmond as PM?

Both, I'd also be quite disgusted about the stupidity of so many Scottish people. Most SNP voters know nothing about politics, you ask them "So why the SNP?" and they give one of two answers. Either "I want independance" or "I like Alex Salmond"

Both to me are rediculous things to like.

It's a zombie-thread, being supported by the Scots.

Our island homeland is Great Britain. Why would anyone want to break it up. There is even the beginnings of a little-Englander right-wing English independence movement now. Anyway, Britain has a Scottish prime minister, who, for all his failings, is a better man than Salmond! Also there are many other Scottish cabinet ministers in the UK government.

So, if the Scots are running Britain, what's the point in Scottish independence? Devolution is a different matter, that makes sense, but independence? Nah!

Remember, it was technically Scotland that took over England (and Wales) when the United Kingdom was formed. King James 6th of Scotland became James 1st of England as well and moved the throne from Edinburgh to London.

Further to my above post, if we're willing to break up our country of Britain, who's to say it would stop at Scottish, Welsh or Cornish independence? What if the Highlands and Islands seek self-governmemt from the rest of Scotland? What if Anglia seeks independence from the rest of England?

Ethnically, the English, Scots, Welsh and even the Irish are quite similar and share a common ancestry. Recent genetic research has shown that throughout these islands, the gene pool of the population (excluding recent immigrants, obviously) is predominantly pre-celtic and celtic.

The Celts, Romans, Vikings, Danes, Angles, Saxons amd Normans were all invaders who have stamped their cultures on parts of our lands but, apart from the Celts, they didn't contribute significantly to the gene pool.

Don't forget, the same 'English' ruling cla** (i.e. descendants of the Norman invaders) that are alleged to have oppressed the Scots, Welsh and Irish did a pretty good job of repressing the true English people too.

Yeh independence for East Anglia! freeeeeeeedoooooooooom! now where did I put my battle axe?! All good points though spud, I think most people aren't up-to-date with the latest genetic research! We all live on this windswept island together why can't we just unite in our common distain for the weather!

After the actions of the huns yesterday in Manchester I wouldn't be suprised if England would want rid of us to be honest.

Huns?! nice sectarian term there! I doubt most English people think Rangers fans represent the whole of the Scottish population or the average Scot! On the genetics side of things heres a website that shows you the simularities between England and Scotland in terms of ancestry!

Huns isn't any more sectarian than 'tims'.

Fans of la shellik accept being called 'tims', but the Scum of Scotland wont accept the label 'huns'.

Well done Motherwell today!
