when this movie first came out , i was blown away with the brutally honest portrayel of soldiers under duress ... and how decent men can do terrible things ... over the years i've seen it about 6 times ... i watched it again this week ... and what struck me for the first time , is how ill disciplined the soldiers were ... they were supposed to be rangers ( elite soldiers ) but they were constantly bickering with each other ... and at times even argued with and defied their captain ....i know there are ex servicemen on here , so i'd like to ask them ... is this a likely scenario in the rangers ?

I doubt you'll find anyone on TFS who served in infantry in World War II.

True.
Though I would of had to understand more of the OP's question to know if branch made a difference to the answer of the question, so I took that part about the navy out when I posted. I probably should have left it in there more info is usually better than not enough.

i'm only entertaining the notion that the rangers may have this quirk in their discipline/behaviour because i've read a little about the english sas regiment and they have a slightly more relaxed relationship between officers and other ranks .

A squad by itself for extended periods of time in the thick of infantry warfare is pretty different from being on a ship.

But ellipses make my brain hurt and I just focused to the answer to the question of who at TFS was old enough to be in WWII. And then I couldn't remember if all navy stayed on the boats at all times or if there was a group or two that may have gone on land, and then I've never seen Saving Private Ryan, so while I figured it was Army and not Navy, that it was probably different. I should of left that navy part in the in answer though, or just moved a long, but I was horribly bored at the moment, and really had nothing better to do than figure out random TFS trivia.
