Its interesting how we view words differently. I think the main chunk of contributors to this thread have obviously been touched by the subject.

I mean no pain to anyone nor any offence. Personally i agree with Arcades, there is a difference between victim and survivor. This is my own ethos that has gotten me through probably the hardest thing in my life. I can sit there and be a victim all my life or i can pull myself up, stick my head up high and say "yes this horrible thing happened to me through no fault of my own and i am NOT ashamed" to me that is surviving.

Yup thats how we do it here at all help centers.

Like you said from a professional view victom applies to the person harmed who lets what happened to them effect them consciously or subconsciously. Survivor is the prfessional term in this context that applies to somone who has through outside help or self improvment realises that he/she has a choice weather or not they let it effect them. Prosessing what happened usually helps with both the conscious and to a slightly grater exstent the non-conscious effects.

Rape always includes doin' the nasty, wheras molestation includes any kind of forced sexual activity.

I think laws/definitions are different in Australia, and they even vary from state to state here.

But rape is non-consentual penetration with any bodypart/object of any part of someone's body.

So in SA digital penetration technically classifies as 'rape'.

Unfortuately less than 1% of offenders are prosecuted.

We use the term sexual assault more often than molestation here but from what I understand it is unwanted touching, gesturing, verbal/implied content that makes someone feel uncomfortable/unsafe.

I think the most important thing is to ensure your survivor/victim knows that it is not their fault and that they are safe.

These are crimes of power, not sex.
