there have been a number of threads on this forum that usually start with 'i am not a racist but....' then the member posting the thread goes on to make totally racist remarks, drawing on all the bad examples of black/white people they have met, thereby attempting to validate their racist views.
i have also encountered this in everyday life, people who start a conversation in the same vein 'i am not a racist, i mean i have black/white friends, but.....'
at least members of the BNP admit that they are racists, but it is the 'closet' racists that really get up my nose. pretending that they are so good and liberal, whilst harbouring real hardcore racist views.
at least be honest next time and start your thread with 'i know i am a racist but here are my views'.

hedkandi, many racists if they are white will insist they are not racist based on the fact that they have black friends, and the same goes for black people with white friends. but during the days of empire the white english colonists in india etc., made great friends with the locals, yet they wouldn't want them marrying their sons/daughters, or working alongside them on an equal footing or even in a superior position.
that is the big difference.

I'm not prejudiced but Racists piss me off.

I was once arguing on a website with an openly racist guy, he said I was being hypocritical as I didn't like him because he hated blacks.

i see what you mean but isn;t that more prejudiced than racist? i always thought of racist as hatred of another person's racist whereas prejudiced is more along the lines of not thinking that person is good enough, isn't it? dunno . . .

hedkandi. you are nearly right.
a racist is a person who is prejudiced against another race due to feelings of supremacy/superiority.
though a black racist often feels hatred towards a white racist, and vice versa.
it all comes under the heading of racism.

I do my best not to be racist, i really do. But i love it when people say something racist or even homophobic, and follow it up with, "my best friend is gay/black/etc" like it makes the whole sentence the said ok..

yep.
it is a fact.
having a coffee with a black/white/gay friend, does not mean that you are not racist or homophobic.
it just means that most human beings are two faced.
so what's new?

I grew up in an area that was all white and didn't have any dealings with another race until I moved to Tennessee and went to college. So there was no racial bias. I found that there is racism on both sides. I however tend to be more understanding of the black americans as they have been treated horribly. Those that think racism in the US is less than it used to be has there head in ..... the sand.

its the same as when someone says

"im not being funny but..." then they go on to complain.

"im not racist but..." exactly what you said wildthing, they go on to make a racist comment thinking the disclaimer will save them. Then in thier defence they say "i know a black person" whoop de doo! i often wonder if they are actually really freinds with them or if the "black person" in question just tolerates them because they are an idiot

That's it. I really don't care if you dislike people, just don't base it on their color. Their are asses of every color and creed. Why limit yourself?
