Hi, I'm having problems with my new GPU! NEED HELP!

Sent this to : MSI support, Ozzu Forums, TFS forums, XFX help center.

Hi, I have problems with my computer, the problem is my MSI G33M motherboard (I think) I just bought an XFX 8600GT which I installed today. once I set everything up and turned on my computer nothing loaded. Not windows XP (my OS) or anything. I could also not go into BIOS. So, I removed the 8600GT and trying turning it on again, the same thing happened. I tried several other things, and double/triple checked all the components. RAM was properly installed, all the wires were tucked away, CPU looked fine, all the fans worked, all the lights were on. Seemed fine, I had also just cleaned it... So the problem is most likely the motherboard or power supply (maybe it's doesn't provide enough power) it's only 420W total. It's a mystery why it isn't working. If you have any ideas why it isn't working please tell me ASAP! I have already asked some people and they are clueless.

This might help, here's my PC specs:

-MSI G33M Motherboard (1333FSB, supports 45nm CPU - Core 2 duo, Quad - supports one 16x PCI express slot)

-Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 @ 2.0 GHz

-1GB DDR2 RAM @ 800MHz

-420W Power Supply

-160 GB HDD @ 7200RPM

-Windows XP Home Edition SP2

-XFX 8600GT 256MB

( GPU )

( MOBO )

remember this configuration worked before (without the 8600) but now nothing loads when I boot it up, and when I changed it back to the old configuration it still doesn't load up.

I really would like to hear from you, thanks in advance.

Hope I didn't **** up my pc! ]

Do you see your computer's initial BIOS screen, or is the screen completely blank all the time?

I would first try to reset the BIOS by removing and replacing the battery on the motherboard. If when you turn on the computer and the fans don't start, then it's probably the power supply, but if the fans go, and nothing happens, then look towards a problematic CPU.

I think you may find the answer is simple mate.

You said your power supply is 450w? Check to see how much power that new vid card needs, Nvidia tends to be power hungry

My opinion? Your power supply isn't giving enough power, put your old graphics card back in and see if it runs, if it is still knackered try resetting your CMOS jumper, look at your motherboard manual for it's location

these days a good computer should have 600 watt psu or thereabouts
even if it doesn't need it yet it makes it more stable and lasts longer under
strain

That is totally not true.

A quality 400 watt PSU is more than enough, even for a high-powered Core 2 Duo system with an 8800GT and two hard drives.

Quality power is more important than total power.
