I came home tonight, after a few drinks. I love to have drinks with friends. I let my dog out to do his business and the neighbor next door was at his back window drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette and started talking to me. I couldn't understand what he was saying, so I walked closer to him and said, How are you doing? He held his beer up and asked "you want"? I said no thank you, I have been drinking since I got home tonight. He said, oh, so sorry, I speak little English.
Now I think to myself. This man is my neighbor and he seems like a good fellow. I wish I could take him up on a beer, or even offer him a drink and be his friend. I can't. He can't communicate with me.
To some people, I need to learn to Spanish if I want his friendship. What do you all think? I live in the United States, and I want to be friends with my neighbors, but I can't.
Am I discriminating against my neighbors because I refuse to learn spanish?

So you can't be nice to your neighbor without speaking Spanish?

Step outside the circle and make friends with them it can't really hurt to learn some Spanish ,can it .

Language is a tough barrier to get around.

But in school, there was this girl who moved from Japan and she could barely say anything in English & we ended up being great friends.

It's possible.

Its not racism, you dont want to hang out with him because of his race, you dont want to hang out with him because you cant talk to him.

Or by speaking only English to him as you become friends could help him learn to better speak and understand English now that he lives in an English speaking country. Like the OP said, when he went to another country he learned the language spoken there . It's not unreasonable to expect the same from people coming here.
