hey, for viruses stay away from mcaffee and nortons because viruses are pretty much made to target these programs...if you want the best around go with nod32 if you want to not spend a lot of money go with avg as pete said it is totally free and catches a fair amount of stuff. For a firewall go with zone alarm i would say if you feel you want one, for spyware go with ad-aware and spybot they are both free and if one misses something the other will get it

Good Free Stuff:

Avast Home: link [www.avast.com]
Antispyware: link [www.spybot.com]
ZoneAlarm Firewall: link [www.zonelabs.com]

I did not add AVG because it lacks many features present in Avast or a premium Antivirus. Why pay Grisoft by buying a full suite when you can get the 3 installed for free without any conflict (unless you mess with the config)?!

For general day-to-day protection, I use and recommend:

AVG Free, realtime protection off, scheduled daily scans
Spybot, scheduled weekly scans
Firefox as your default browser
Windows Firewall
A hardware router

With these five items, you will have very lightweight yet very effective protection.

By being careful about what you download and run from the internet, you can use these items and never see a virus or malware again.

Download and use more specialized scanning tools as required to clean particular infections.

NOD32 rocks! I deployed it for a company last year. And the license is kinda cheap too.

you realize if you run two virus scanners they pick up things the other one has quarantined? occasionally they pick up each other too.
