I thought the ugliness of a language was of its pronunciation and not its origins.

Yes, the Greeks are very nice people too but the ancient Greek language is as dead as a do-do. It only survives as part of other modern languages like English. Latin is all but dead too as only the doctors and lawyers and priests use it any more. ( they use it as a form of cypher so that we don't know what they are saying ).

I am sure that ugliness - like beauty - is in the mind of the beholder and using this maxim what might be ugly to one might be beautiful to another.

While using "origins" as an example of the bastardisation of the English language this does not mean that those individual languages were ugly themselves per-se.

The stringing together of the foreshortened vocabulary is what I find fascinating about the German language and what adds to its interest as far as I am concerned. The tightly defined genders of German can be a problem though until you know them all. Just to say Der, De and Das for male, female and neuter will let you down regularly until you know exactly where to apply the right gender at each time of use. I find this great fun and just another fascinating part of the German language. I really wish I knew it fluently as then I could get good at the complex grammar and spelling too.

I think that the people who don't like German either don't like it because they are ignorent of it or they don't like its gutteral quality. Being a Scot makes me able to pronounce gutteral words more easily and I have taken to the German sounds much more readily than if I had been English or whatever. It is amazing just how many common Scots words are used as common German words too like Kirk for Church and ken for know and Imgang/gangin for going and such-like.

Maybe that is why I like it so much ?

"En arkhe en ho Logos kai ho Logos en pros ton Theon."

The same in today's Greek 2000 years later :
"En arkhe eto o Logos kai o Logos eto para to Theo."

Little difference, the article "ho" has lost its "h", the verb to be "en" has changed into "eto" and "pros" and "para" both exist in old and modern Greek.

Greek, at least 3500 years old, is still alive and well.

I quite like the german language. The languages that I can think off that I find sound ugly though are Welsh and french.

All languages for me was okay, it's ugly because most of the time we don't understand what the hell their talking about, and it sounds different with the way they we speak, but once we learn how to speak like that, everyhting will be just fine!

Gaelic is one ugly mother. scottish/welsh whichever it is..they both horrid anyway

One can only be a judge as to whether any particular language is "ugly" or not if your can speak the particular language fluently.
I only learned English late in life, and initially thought it was very ugly and illogical - why pronounce "see" and "sea" the same (plus many other examples)?
Actually, English as spoken by the Dutch (and don't they think they can speak good English!), and English spoken by the Indians, and English as spoken by African blacks, are all extremely ugly.
