And for the record, I'm all for the right to bear arms. I just think you should have a permit of some sort to do so...some places you need them and some you don't. Although a background check is needed, we all know how easy that is. And once you own one, it's yours to carry, use, sell...Not my idea of safety.

Maybe a large bubble for my family to live in...
But the idea of taser-toting humans doesn't sit right with me.

Even though the criminals all have guns, carrying a taser "doesn't sit right with" you.

I'd honestly like to know what your idea of "safety" really is... but without the sarcasm. It genuinely sounds to me like your idea of "safety" is to deprive all law-abiding citizens of weapons.

I am a law-abiding citizen. I took self-defense classes and I have a gun permit. My idea of safety is not something that I can lay out for you, which is why I was sarcastic. I apologize.
In a perfect world, the "law-abiding citizens" wouldn't NEED weapons. I realize this is not the case.
My point for this entire topic is that I don't think it's a good idea to just hand them out (yes, I know more goes into it than that, but hopefully you catch my drift.) I would never want to deny anyone the right to defend themselves, but the line needs to be drawn somewhere.

"I am very much for police using tasers, its an incredibly efficent way of rendering a person helpless".

This is the idea i had when i contributed to this thread..
but then jonathan cleared it up for me telling me the incapacitation is momentary..
Maybe i have "taser" confused with "stun gun"..or are they both the same?
Iam confused..i thought one of them at least did incapacitate the victim for a fairly long period of time.
..or are they the same?

It's not what you think you are...It's what you "think", you "are".

You have a gun permit, so presumably you have a gun.

Do you want anyone on this site saying you shouldn't be allowed to have a gun because you might hurt someone with it?

That's precisely what you are saying about tasers, which are virtually non-lethal.. especially compared to a GUN.

Something that really stuck with me was a case one of my lecturers told us about. 2 people were shot in a pub in edinburgh, close to the forensics building, which was handy. The crowd from the pub chased the gunmen. 1 got away but the other wasn't so lucky. The crowd caught up to him, beat him with his own gun and ran him over with getaway car. They didn't need guns of their own to strike back.

They are basically the same thing. Taser is a brand name of stun gun that has the capability to shoot electrode darts on wires to stun a victim several feet away in addition to "regular" stun gun usage.

They only incapacitate for a long time in the movies. Once the shock is removed, full function returns almost immediately.

That sort of strategy worked brilliantly at, say, Virginia Tech.

Ok that worked for a big group of people. What about the Lady that likes to go out on a jog. or just walk to the local grocery store. She won't have a big group to watch over and protect if something were to happen.

I think women should have tasers, if a crook comes out and attacks her what is she going to do?

Sorry, hitting someone with your purse just isn't going to cut it in todays world.

There are no bad guns, just bad gun owners.

I go out on my own a lot, especially now that I'm in Aberdeen and don't have my dog with me all the time. It's all part of a panic and there is a strange idea that a lone woman would have time to pull a gun out of her purse, aim and fire in the split-second or so it takes an attacker to strike. THe taser would have the same time limitation. It's not effective in that kind of situation.

Not saying it's foolproof but the people in the pub did not need a gun or a taser to stop the criminal although they did mess with the forensic evidence.
