I thought it was already legal for people to carry tasers?

It is (in most places), and has been for a while.

That's the problem. They're considered "safer" than a gun or a knife. And I don't know about you guys, but I've heard of plenty of dumbasses on the news who use both knives and guns. I can only imagine how that number of people would increase with the use of a "safer" weapon.
Not all people will use restraint like they should.

true, not all people will but that doesnt mean everyone should loose the right to own one.

The scenarios you listed are somewhat far-fetched, will result in criminal charges against the weapon user, and, in any case, extremely unlikely to result in a fatality. The vast majority of the time, a taser hurts and incapacitates for just a few seconds, after which the pain and inability to move vanish immediately.

The potential to save dozens or hundreds of lives and prevent dozens or hundreds of rapes per year significantly outweighs the risks.

In any case, it is our Constitutional right to arm ourselves for self-defense in whatever way we see fit.

Trust me, those scenarios are not far-fetched. Especially when drinking is involved. And hot tempers.
My problem is the regulation of these weapons. I'm willing to bet that many women will buy them for husbands, boyfriends, etc.
And really, I don't want to run the risk of being tasered if I'm out somewhere and a situation gets out of control.

My opinion can kick your opinion's ass. Nah na nah na boo boo

Here's how it can be good for society:

Rapist: "Hm, that woman has a purse. So many of them are carrying tasers these days I'll move on to the next one not carrying anything."

Not really. A rapist is hardly likely to not attack someone because she doesn't have a purse. They still haven't worked out all the problems associated with the taser and a woman could mistake someone's intentions and harm an innocent person. Like with the gun, there is also the problem of pulling out the taser and firing since attacks tend to be sudden and unforseen.

On a dark night it is easy to mistake an innocent person for a threat and it is easy to feel you are being followed. Having been n that situation myself (followed home by a mental patient during a power-cut) it is incredibly easy to see a threat where there is none and people do panic and it does result in problems. You don't know whether the person you're firing at has a heart condition, whether they are actually a threat or why they are there.

That's what I thought.

I'm all about anything that gives me an advatage over an attacker. Given that it has been legal in most places for awhile and we haven't heard about crazed women needlessly tasering people, I think we're safe

I personally think its a great idea! My daughter was going to work the other morning and she out to be out of the house by 5:45. Where we live it a lot of bushes and it badly lit.And she told me she was quite fearful has she heard rustling in the bushes.

To cut a long story short i wouldn't think twice about getting my daughters one.

Criminals "of all sorts" have had access to whatever weapons they want, including tasers, for a long long time.

The fact is that rapists generally don't need any weapons to accomplish their goal.

True..but I, as a woman, would still like to feel i had some fighting chance..
the thoughts of lying there unable to move while they did whatever..
is just too creepy to really even think about..

Tasers don't work like that. They only incapacitate for a couple of seconds. Then it's over. You can't just hold a taser on someone and have them incapacitated for any length of time.

Gives women a chance to kick them where it hurts though so hopefully they stay down a bit longer

I'm pretty sure that you're not going to jump up and start skipping around after being tasered...

No matter how sure of something you are, that doesn't make it real.

Do some research and learn a thing or two about something before you form any "pretty sure" opinions about it. The problem with gross assumptions based on zero knowledge - such as the one you made here - is that they are usually very wrong.

Well, my husband knows a thing or two about it, and I'm willing to believe him. First-hand experience and all.

IMO if this taser stops one rape in the world its worth keeping around.

I am so sick and tired of people thinking its only ok for the criminals to have the weapons.

Life is what you make of it!!
