Just saw this on the Today show... link [today.msnbc.msn.com]
(Sorry, not sure how to link, yet)

Does anyone else think it's a REALLY bad idea to be allowing women to carry tasers? I'm beyond myself

I think it's a fantastic idea.

It is a bad idea. Carrying a taser can be just as bad as carrying a gun. It can be fatal, even the person hit does not have a heart condition or a pacemaker. It can be modefied to make it more deadly. It's painful and selling it to women spreads the message that they are constantly in danger of attack whenever they go out walking. You would be better off taking self-defense lessons than anything else.

Catch me as I fall,
And even more so while I'm standing tall.

Women *are* constantly in danger of attack.

People should be able to defend themselves. Who cares if the taser has a 0.02% chance of killing someone when that person is attacking you?

Scenario:
Woman gets drunk. Man pisses her off. Woman shoots off 50,000 volts from her cute pink new machine (complete with MP3 player carrying case ). Man ends up in hospital. Or has a heart condition and dies.
Scenario:
Woman gets pissed off at another woman (as they often do). Woman pulls out her sparkly new leopard print taser (complete with MP3 player carrying case). Mayhem ensues...
etc, etc.
I can't see how this is a good thing for society.

I think using a taser in anything other than self-defence would be considered a crime, so i think people are not going to use it any more than they would a knife or gun. If they do then they are dumbasses.

Here's how it can be good for society:

Rapist: "Hm, that woman has a purse. So many of them are carrying tasers these days I'll move on to the next one not carrying anything."

The scenarios you listed are somewhat far-fetched, will result in criminal charges against the weapon user, and, in any case, extremely unlikely to result in a fatality. The vast majority of the time, a taser hurts and incapacitates for just a few seconds, after which the pain and inability to move vanish immediately.

The potential to save dozens or hundreds of lives and prevent dozens or hundreds of rapes per year significantly outweighs the risks.

In any case, it is our Constitutional right to arm ourselves for self-defense in whatever way we see fit.

That's the problem. They're considered "safer" than a gun or a knife. And I don't know about you guys, but I've heard of plenty of dumbasses on the news who use both knives and guns. I can only imagine how that number of people would increase with the use of a "safer" weapon.
Not all people will use restraint like they should.

..and then also the rapist, criminals of all sorts can get hold of these tasers as well and use them to incapacitate his victim..a double attack in my opinion.
SCARY!!!

It's not what you think you are...It's what you "think", you "are".

Criminals "of all sorts" have had access to whatever weapons they want, including tasers, for a long long time.

The fact is that rapists generally don't need any weapons to accomplish their goal.

they can do that anyways with all kinds of things if the rape or attack is premeditated. I think anything that deters such crimes is a good thing. I am very much for police using tasers, its an incredibly efficent way of rendering a person helpless.
