Salda sniffed the mouth with distaste. she lifted her head to the pain filled wolf. "it... hurts... doesn't it...?"

Aeonta felt the warmth of power build up in her belly... she moved Salda gently away from the mouth and touched it with her moist nose. The strange wolf moaned softly as the terrible mouth slowly creaked open, and he rolled away. As soon as he was clear Aeonta broke contact with the mouth and it snapped closed with a terrible crack.
Aeonta flew back as if thrown by a grizzly- and landed on her back next to a boulder in the clearing.
Salda went to the male- he accepted her approach and greeted her nose-to-nose. Both looked around for Aeonta.

Aeonta laid still for a moment, then caught her breath. Slowly she regained her feet and joined Salda at the male's side. She moved up and down his body with her face close to his fur... he had no injuries aside from the leg- bloody, matted with leaves and debris.
She gathered up the warmth in her belly again, and touched her nose to the male's haunch >heal<. He whined, but then lay quietly, looking at Aeonta then Salda quizzically. After a moment, he stood up and took a step >fine<.
Aeonta was tired but happy- and asked the male his name.

Salda sat close and cold, covered in rain water and mud. she sniffed the wolf
slowly and calmly.
"Taint..." whispered the male wolf... "taint..."

Taint was weak, and cold, exhausted from the time he was held by the iron jaw. Salda and Aeonta flanked him and lay on the tundra grass, to the lee of the boulder, sheltered a little from the wind and driven rain. They shared their warmth and together they all rested.

Salda felt Taint shaking in between them.she moved closer, the smell of blood becoming stronger. Aeonta placed her head on his shoulders. their warmth faught the rain like the rock that was sheltering them; having faught so many storms and survived. Salda thought they felt like a rock.

Aeonta didn't know when she fell asleep. As often happened, she was exhausted after the healing and needed the rest.
But she did know when she wakened. An icy wind raked her spine where Taint had been. A paw's length away Salda stood, her hackles up.

Just beyond the clearing, Aeonta could see Taint standing. At his shoulder was a large female, clearly pregnant. At his other side was another male- a grizzled silverback with blurry eyes. Behind the trio was their whole pack- another female, and several juveniles.

Salda was overcome. was this another pack from beyond the red lake? it was a small pack, and she knew she didn't recognize them to be a pack from the forest. She forced herself to the ground, tail between her legs, head down in submission.

Taint walked forward, nudging the old male. He walked slowly, painfully, leaning on Taint.
>help?<
Aeonta knew there was no healing power great enough to turn back time. The old male would not hunt again, could not father a cub.
She knew the only healing that would help would be to relieve the silverback's pain, which would only relieve him of life as well. The thread of pain was the only one tying him to the earth.

Salda felt sorry for the silverback. >painful...<
she glanced at Aeonta, and she knew that he should only be relieved for the pain.

Aeonta stood near Taint, with the elder between them. She gathered her power again. Instead of sending that warmth into the elder to heal, she used it to draw his pain out, into her own body. In doing that that last tie that bound him to his mortal body was undone, and the shell he had occupied crumpled to the ground.
She could see the unbound spirit wolf leap with joy... But Taint could not. All he could see was that the elder was dead. He turned on Aeonta with a growl.
As soon as he bared his teeth, his pack turned as one, surrounding Aeonta. She could not run... as she had taken the elder's pain into herself, and had not yet had time to transfer that pain into a different power. She was trapped. She looked across to Salda, who understood. >help!<
