22/M/Gloucester, United Kingdom Join Date: Oct 2007 | The power in my last laptop went a month or two ago (after a few heavy drops) so I finally replaced it this week with a £340 (GBP) laptop. It's dual core 1.7 with 1GB RAM, and came with Vista Home Premium.
I love the upgrade to Vista... there isn't a great deal of change from XP, really. I love Aero Glass, and I love [Win]+[Tab] (that pretty [Alt]+[Tab] alternative you always see them talking about), and a few things are nice, like the improved login screen, and the Start menu is a bit more accurate about "Last used programs".
...but overall? It's pretty much XP underneath. Everything's improved, and I like the improvements (including Windows Media Center on all Home/Ultimate copies) but I reckon you could get it to run on an old celeron if you wanted - it'd just take years to boot up =]
Edit: By the way, on the first boot, I installed Firefox, Thunderbird, and MS Office, and since then I've installed Filezilla, VLC, Daemon Tools, and a few other apps, but I haven't really had any problems so far.

Obviously you didn't get this preloaded, all builds with preloads are designed to suit, so its obvious your PC spec isn't up to it, anyone having trouble at this stage in its development can only put it down to one of three things, poor configuration, poor spec, trying to use old incompatible programs.
Vista is far in advance of what XP was at the same timescale, remember XP had to issue an SP after just 6 months, it was such a mess. | | |

I agree that Vista is a step up from XP. It requires a lot more jam to run smoothly, though . The recent SP1 has made life much easier.
