I think that this is not correct. If you have a new laptop you will be able to access your old work, provided it has been made with compatible software. To be able to answer you on this point I have to know what program you used to produce your old work.
New laptop: if you have the choice and you are using a legal copy of XP that can be installed on a new computer (that is, if you bought a full version of XP, not a "cripple ware" delivered with you old notebook) then my advice is the following:
Buy the new notebook with Vista Business.
Vista Business (I had it on my new Samsung notebook) is a total unreliable crap, BUT it has a BIG advantage: it forces the notebook producers to deliver very good hardware with the new notebook. Otherwise it would not even boot. Once you have a notebook you or (if you do not know how) a friend of yours will help you to format the hard disk and install the well proven XP pro on the machine. You will obtain a lightning fast machine with now drawbacks and you can continue to use all your old software. Once 1 year has gone by, you can then install Vista (if it still exists and is not put aside like the abortive creatures Windows ME (juck!) and Windows MCE (LOL)). In one year time it will have probably the second service pack, convenient drivers and the free software you use will probably be compatible.
Second solution: your software is really not compatible with Vista and you need a new notebook now. The best solution is not to buy a notebook with XP since the support will run out next year. Since a new notebook with Vista will make everything incompatible you do not loose anything if you consider buying a Macintosh Notebook. They have a much better operating system and they care better for their Operating Systems once they are out. A big advantage would also be the much higher security and the much lower numbers of viruses (if any) existing that may menace Mac Os X.
Third solution: improbable if you are not a pc crack. I do not think you are. But still: you save your old work (I suppose here that you speak of office files) on a DVD or USB key and you get a friend to prove your old notebook if Linux compatible. You may then run it much faster on Linux (faster than XP) and absolutely virus free. However this is the most difficult solution if you do not have somebody to help you and it will not be possible on all notebooks. But the try would be free, since the Linux operating system does not cost a thing.
