Hello.

I was wondering what it is that makes some people decide learning music theory pointless?

because to new people it can seem quite complicated, and hard to learn. and most just want to play more than they want to learn

i know music theory but i choose not to use it cause it kinda restricts what you can do with your writing.yeah i can come in handy but i have a freind who writes everything based in theory, its his own style but i still sounds boring cause there nothing new or exciting in it

I play doctor for five minutes flat,Before I cut my heart open, and let the air out
Three bugs,a pound of dust,Some wind spilled before me,In the strangest manner that had,Broke away my tear spout

I quite like music theory, it really helps you to understand what you're playing or singing about. Some aspects of theory are quite difficult to grasp, especially at first, so probably puts people off of continuing with learning it.

They think they'll become jailed within a box and be restricted to the whatever amount of notes and chords within a scale.

Most of the idiots don't realise, however, that whether they are knowingly using theory or not, everything they do partains to it. They claim that by not using it they can write freely without restrictions, where as in reality everything they will play "from the heart" will fit nicely into a neat little major scale with the odd modulation.

The most innovative musicians who actually think outside the box and create unique music knowingly used theory to their advantage.

Really people, we have accumulated hundreds of years worth of musical knowledge, learn to use it to your advantage instead of just dismissing it all as restricting, boring ideas.

Music I listen too...

Yea, music theory is tough. Most people that dismiss it can write by ear and don't think that it's important. In some cases, depending on what you're doing, it's not. If you are going to write classical music.. or really any kind of complex music that you want to sound good, you need to know theory. You need to know scales, modes, and harmony especially. When it comes to Chord structure, people who write without knowing how to build good sounding chords and how chord structure works, will end up having crappy sounding music. The most common mistake is putting notes in a chord too close or too far away from eachother (makes it sound muddled) and a hard to spot mistake are parallel 5ths; those will produce empty sounding chords.. but there are many, many more!

it does not restrict what you can do, it opens up what you can do. Popular bands you hear on the radio dismiss music theory and they are really simple and repetetive. However Prog bands such as Dream Theater use music theory to their full advantage and listen to how diverse and amazing they are because of it.

I used to be a music major, and I'm not trying to brag, but I made all A's in theory except for my second semester I made a B. In a way, I liked theory, and it's helped me to understand it, but some of the best pickers I've ever heard didn't know a lot about theory. Imo, you can over-analyze music until you've basically ripped it apart. I have a friend who is so into theory that when she hears music, she can't enjoy it because she's too busy analyzing it.
