18/M/Chicago, Illinois Join Date: Oct 2009 | I pose the question, but I will say why I think it is too.
Why do I think? Because sometimes things are just too perfect, or too normal. We like to think there is a great evil power over us sometimes, plotting things behind our backs and controlling things, watching our moves. The popularity of the idea comes from books like 1984 and some crime/drama thrillers that are very good movies. If in reality, you learned that "oh, I guess everything really is just normal" then its boring. You like to think that you're bucking the system, rebelling, or fighting (secretly) against a common tyranny with your fellow conspiracy theorists.
Sometimes, people just dont like a particular person or government, so they will beleive anything they hear that works against that person/group/government's credebility. Like, I hate Bush, so when someone suggests there was a 9/11 conspiracy, they jump on the bandwagon against all reason.
And look at some of the conspiracies, they are ridiculous, but if you keep digging, you can always find something that "proves" its right. You can make a conspiracy for anything and find backing for it easily if you just twist the facts a certain way--manipulation of data, misinformation, and disinformation (the media does this all the time).
Why do you think people love to beleive in conspiracies?
If evil is my enemy, then I will fight against it. If evil is on my side, then evil is my friend. If it is simply the way of all human nature, are we then all evil?

Some naturally anylise everything, for others they are happy to accept what they are told, either way people are entitled to their own view and freedom of speech. Sometimes it can be a good thing sometimes not so good, but if we all believed what our governents told us all of the time then that would leave us wide open.
Just because everyone is equally entitled to express their opinions does not mean that everyone's opinions are equally credible or worthy of consideration.

No, but they are still entitled to express them.

They want to feel important. If something important is going on, AND they are one of an elite few who know about it, that makes them feel important.
And I think everyone, with very few exceptions, Loves to be important. It's part of human nature.

Like I said I think it's more an issue of distrust earned by the actions of those that give us the truth, more then feeling important.
There are those who believe in conspiracies who wish they didn't know that information and feel no importance in knowing or believing in these things.
But, they have no way of actually knowing whether what they know is true or not. Let's face it: There is almost no way of knowing 100% sure that most conspiracy theories are true. If it was that obvious, then it would cease to be a conspiracy theory and become more of a fact. Also, What you are saying about distrust earned by the actions of those that give us the truth, I see "those that give us the truth" as the government in this case, because conspiracy theories are most often about what the government says. Conspiracies bloom out of distrust because once someone or something has been proven untrustworthy of a liar or something of that nature once, they are no longer trusted all of the time. So people do form conspiracy theories out of mistrust.
P.S. Either that or they really do mnow something, and thats a whole different thing.
