The slave trade is a prime example of how Britain asserted its authority over other countries by treating foreigners as commodities to be bought and sold. Nothing really to be proud of there, however much I like tea and coffee and the other things we bought in from abroad in the process. I don't think it's for us to be ashamed of though, as it wasn't us who carried out the actions. But I'd certainly not be saying it's a reason to be proud of the country either. It's just history. | ||||||

A shoplifter in the states would have a SWAT team brass him up. Where as a murderer in the UK would have knock on the door and a chat along the lines of: Police: KNOCK KNOCK Murderer: Hello Old CHap, Can I help you Police: Why yes did you happen to murder anyone today Murderer: WHy yes indeed I did my good fellow, come lets discuss it over an Earl Gray, Tip Tip | ||||||

I agree. I don't really understand how I'm meant to be any more proud over the British Empire than I am over the Roman Empire. I didn't have anything to do with either of them. It is pretty fascinating though. | ||||||
