I really like Madame Marneffe from Balzac's Cousin Bette (literature student, sorry). She's not a positive woman but she's really strong and I really admire the way she brings everyone around her into her web. She dominates everyone around her, directly or deviously, and puts herself in a position of destructive power in the middle of a man's world. God, that sounds awful, doesn't it

Demelza from the Poldark books by Winston Graham.

She came from the gutter but managed to hold her own against the gentry, her rival the beautiful Elizabeth and was a perfect match for the rebellious, adventous, risk taking husband Ross. The working cla** respected her and the gentry came to. Not bad for a kitchen maid!

Got to agree with you there!

I must concur that Miss Scarlett is the empitome of courage and strength and she wins hands down. But i find Alice from Lewis Carrolls Alice's adventures in wonderland to be somewhat courageous too, how many of us could say that they would have stood tall in the face of the queen of hearts while she bellowed "OFF WITH HER HEAD!" at us???

Lillian Cutler from from Virginia Andrews Cutler series, when you read about her childhood you understand why she's so hard nosed.

Sayuri from Memoirs of a Geisha, probably because i just finished the book and the story is still fresh in my mind. I like that she seemed very real to me, i felt i could understand decisions that she made and the thoughts she had.

I must agree about Kay Scarpetta and her niece Lucy, as well as Mary Russel. I also love Amanda from Tom Robbin's Another Roadside Attraction. I like many of Robbin's female characters but Amanda is really the strongest.

Has anyone ever read those books "What Katie Did"? It's an old series aimed at early teens - I read them a long time ago but the strength of the title character is something I still think about. Silly, I guess, but true!

I also love Maria Wyeth in Joan Didion's "Play It As It Lays"
