I think it would be Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton.

Nothing has turned out as we expected. It never does. Life's under no obligation to give us what we expect. We take what we get and are thankful it's no worse than it is.

Uh oh, anyone remember the last thread on here that had to do with Jimi
Hendrix?

a very difficult question to answer. what era? what style of music, elecrtic/acoustic? Alive, dead?

Clapton stands out across the board.

Hands down Buddy Rich and Gene Kruppa, that's where drummer's were finally recognized for their talent, then all the drummer's of the 70's era sang their praises and emulated them and showing that drummer's were as talented a musician as the other musicians in their bands and started to lead the band and became forefront drummers and singers as per example Phil Collins, and Iron Butterfly's Ron Bushy's solo that has never been matched to this day.

Levon Helm of The Band comes to mind

Ugh you ignorant people you. No way to say the "best" guitarist because everyone has their own style, its all opinion. But what isn't opinion is saying one guitarist is better than the other based on versatility, technique, and overall complete mastery of the guitar. And that my friends is why Hendrix and Clapton should not even be mentioned in a thread about the best guitarists. They are undeserving of that title by a long shot. Maybe you could consider Hendrix for innovator or top showman but hes far from the best guitarist. Steve Vai, Michael Romeo, John Petrucci, Al Di Meola, and countless others would rape Hendrix and Clapton in a battle of versatility, technique, and overall mastery.

I don't know if they're the best but my personal 2 favourites would be Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.
