Roughly 4,000 troops helped clean up the atoll between 1977 and 1980. Like Mr. Snider, most did not even wear shirts, let alone respirators. Hundreds say they are now plagued by health problems, including brittle bones, cancer and birth defects in their children. Many are already dead. Others are too sick to work.

Sadly, Tim Snyder is not alone. He and many others are at the end of a long chain of lies, deceits and neglected responsibility for the human tragedy of nuclear weapons testing conducted over many years. And it's not just happening to Americans either. We've known of the same scandal over the victims of nuclear weapons testing here for many years

It would be easy to be blithe and say that this is what happens when soldiers blindly obey orders, without question in the "my country right or wrong" manner that all too often happens, and equally, all too often, is used as a get out clause for everything that nobody wants to take responsibility for.

But that would be wrong. That would be as callous and brutal as the act of sending men into extremely dangerous situations with inadequate, and often no, protection at all.

The men who took part in these tests and were exposed to radiation should be given all the treatment, support and care that they need. Their government should formally admit their responsibility and liability, and ensure that proper safety measures are taken in the future.

These men should be given proper medical treatment and care, no matter what the cost to public funds. Not because they were soldiers, but because they are human beings. They deserve compassion and care regardless of how they acquired their awful afflictions.

during the filming of this movie, john and the cast and the company that production this film. everyone thee was exposed by radiation from this fallout.
