yea, sometimes it's easier to eat out than cooking for one..so I grab a group of girlfriends and we have a great time.
Cooking for one does suck By the time I get used to it, Maxi will be here and I'll be cooking for two

I've gone through a few rounds of weight loss in the past 5 years. The first time I went from around 200 to 160, then from 175 to 165 and now I'm halfway through a 170-155 trip.
Each time, I chronicle every single calorie I eat. When I go back and look at the things I eat, I'm often surprised to see that virtually all of the foods I love - pizza, hamburgers, Doritos, Chinese food, etc - are still there quite a bit. The key is that I eat less often and eat less food at a sitting. Instead of getting two chalupas and a burrito, I'll get 3 regular tacos. Still fills me up but I'm looking at 540 calories instead of 1300. Or I'll make pasta and garlic bread but only eat one piece of bread and one bowl of pasta and put the rest away, instead of going back and doing a second helping. That one decision makes dinner a 600 calorie affair instead of a 1200 calorie one.
Weird we all have our things..I'm a constant weigher..I weigh when get up and go to bed, it governs roughly how I eat.

The portions they give you in restaurants these days are obscene.

Yeah they are. I have never been able to eat a full meal, even when I was heavier. My mom can down a whole restaurant meal and wonders why she can't lose weight. We are the same size, but she does work her a** off on the farm and gets tons of exercise.

Honestly, it's less about what you eat than how much of it you eat.
Yes, it's good to grill instead of fry, fill up on veggies, limit the oils, creams, and cheeses you use cooking, etc. But your best weapon is to eat less.
Portion control is your single most potent weapon in the weight loss fight.
I agree because I eat all the right foods but at times just too much of it.
And another thing to OP is that sometimes you have to take all into consideration when trying to lose weight. Meds, age, physical condition, digestive problems etc......

100/M/The north, Join Date: Aug 2005 | I love food. I love food so much. Eating gives me more pleasure than almost anything else. I can eat a large amount, too. I could easily consume a large pizza from Domino's in one sitting. That's 2400 calories.
It wasn't until I was pushing 200 that I started to investigate and learn about food. It's easy to be ignorant of how many calories are in things and how the little things really add up until you actually put some work in and analyze everything you eat in a day.
That was the biggest key for me. I made a fancy Excel spreadsheet and started keeping track of everything I ate. Very eye-opening. Now I understand much more fully how what I put into my body determines what happens to it. I still love food and love to eat but I've learned how to balance the joy of eating with decent nutrition and intake management.

I noticed that particularly in America. I could never, ever finish a meal out there! I felt like I was just throwing away dollars on food that I couldn't eat, and those were small portions! Luckily portion sizes are pretty decent here. I can normally finish a meal. | | | Edited: October 01, 2009 @ 19:51

Well not necessarily. You still need to get all the essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs. You can't just eat bread and cheese all the time in less quantities. Yes controlling your portion size is crucial in weightloss but you do need to eat healthy for overall body health. Being skinny does not mean healthy. And when making a diet specifically for weight loss, you need to make sure that its aids in replenishing all the minerals you loose while exercising. Also...it aids in regulating your metabolism etc.

I think both are equally important. | | | Edited: October 01, 2009 @ 20:03

I agree...crazy. I can rarely finish a meal at restaurant, in fact i don't think I ever had. There was always some left on my plate that i either never ate or had to take home.
Plus it also gets into quality vs quantity issue.
Though its truly only in America where portion sizes are so big. The kids meal in the U.S is equivalent to an adult meal in the U.K.

Cook all the same things you normally make for your family, but take out the condiments and salt, and double your portions of vegetables before you touch anything else. The fiber and chewing makes you fill a little fuller, and you're not getting all the extra calories from eating too much meat or potatoes. I also try to eat a salad for lunch every day, but I use regular fat dressing (just follow what's on the label so you don't use too much!) and put lots of beans and other tasty omega 3's and 6s on there. That not only tastes good, but it fills you up.

That would seem like the most sensible method. I imagine that if I made a note of every single thing I ate over the course of one day, I'd realise that I'm eating more than I thought. Making a note combined with portion control would definitely help me. Hunger between meals is the other problem. I try to have fruit, seeds and other low-fat foods in the fridge but my weakness is mayonnaise and creamy salad dressings which tend to render the salad a little less healthy. I suppose the same thing applies: put less on (apparently the low-fat or lite options are not particularly healthy as they contain too much sugar or other dubious ingredients to compensate for the reduced fat).

Either orange roughy or shark steak will give you a protein rich, low calorie dinner, try cooking either with peas or beans. Sauerkraut is excellent and you'll boost your metabolism to burn more calories than are in the food. Also, cucumbers (pickles), mushrooms, celery, radishes are all "free foods" (a diabetic's meal plan lets you eat as much as you want).
Sound advice. Thanks, Dan
