I don't think that is what she was saying at all (please correct me if I'm wrong). She never said they shouldnt' be kept as pets, she said she is scared of them. It is totally different.

I TOTALLY agree!
MOST of the reason pit bulls have such a bad reputation is because of the owners that train them to fight or attack. If there was more control on who could adopt or buy dogs like these, there would be much less bites/attacks, and it would clear up a lot of the misconceptions people have on pit bulls.

Most animal shelters and pit pull rescue shelters do interviews and background checks on people before allowing them to adopt a pit bull. They even come to the house the dog will live in to make sure it is a good environment for the dog. A lot of them even require that you take your pit bull to training/behaviour classes.

I agree with you completely. Pitbulls are a breed of dog like any other. The only difference is that one little pitbull and its owner was actually charged with "assault". I bet if they went through the records of how many complaints are made toward other breeds of dog, the dog probably wouldn't be considered a domestic animal anymore. But it isn't the dog's fault because the dog is taught how to act and if the dog is treated like crap, it'll do the same to others because that is its mentality which was set by the owner. Pitbulls shouldn't be banned, they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Here in the bay area where I live there is a lot of controversy on whether or not to ban pit bulls, and there are a lot of pit bulls that get put down every day because people can't take care of them, or they have puppies, and can't keep them.

What is your view on this?
Do you think pit bulls should be banned?
Do you think pit bulls are horrible animals?

I think pit bulls are one of the most loyal types of dog around.
I own a pit bull, and have many friends that have them too, and they are wonderful animals. I think the mentality and personality of ANY DOG is directly a reflection of their owner, and if a dog is aggressive, or anti-social, it is the owners fault, and they should be to blame.

i totally agree i love pitbulls

I agree banning Pitbulls is not the answer. People are still going to have them. Like gun control, you know what they say, when it's criminal to have guns, only criminals will have guns. I am against both by the way.

I had a cockapoo that bit people more often than my Rotweiller or my Doberman Pincher, German Shepherd and Pittbull ever did, couldn't get her out of it, so it's not the breed of dog it's the dog's own personality, some say they are either trained that way or not, or it depends on the way they are treated, I disagree, having had a variety of breeds of dogs I can stand by what I say when I say that they have their own temperaments, and you can actually see it in them when they are pups, the shy one's, the insecure one's, the submissive one's, the dominant one's, the aggressive one's, just go take a real good look at a litter of pups at six weeks or so and just watch them, they already have their set temperaments.

Some people raise mean and nasty kids.
You are a product of your environment. I have had 5 pit bulls and they all turned out loving, laid back, smart and loyal. Then again I didn't have to prove how much of a man I am through my dog. Not just because I am female but because I am a secure and intelligent person.
Some people should not own certain types of dogs. We need a way to ban owners not the dog.

I read some other responses and my neighbor has 2 yorkies that are the most obnoxious and aggressive little bastards in the neighborhood. They are also the smallest and have gotten into an altercation with every other dog on the street. In less than half a mile my neighborhood has 17 dogs. Those Yorkies are the only dogs everybody hates and has problems with.
Hmmmmm......

pitbulls, no matter what way you cut it have a predisposition to violence.
this is what they were bread for, they arn't a naturally occuring breed of dog, they were bread exactly for these tendencies.

so that can't be ignored.

its by no means a coincidence that they have a higher rate of attacking people than other dogs, its in their nature.

i'm not sure where i stand on letting responsible people own them, if they're well cared for and trained and guarded closely you can avoid these incidences.
maybe concentrating more on the people breeding and fighting them would be a more moral thing to do then to cull all the pitbulls.
but people have a general view that if it'll protect children from attack, which it certainly will, thats a good option to take.

Pit Bulls were created by humans. More accurately by Boston-Irish immigrants during the mid 1800's. American breeders of the time are responsible for starting the breed down the path to the dogs they are today. They were originally breed as fighting dogs. Around 1835 Bull baiting was banned and so the main stream era of bred-to-fight pit bulls was over.(sort of)

Apart of a pit bull's aggressiveness is in it's genes. Breeding can be broken down and explained as a form of genetic manipulation, isolating "desirable" traits and breeding pairs of dogs with that trait as a dominant one. Yes a lot of this aggressiveness and be curbed by a loving home and good training but the aggressiveness is still genetically imprinted on the dog and can surface.

Lucky for us all breeders of good repute and ethic have bred a lot of there aggressiveness out. They are not exactly the same breed they were in the 1800's. I have a pit living with me now and he's not a mindless killing machine. He IS extremely protective but not the pit bull the news media would have you believe.

I believe it's upon the owner's or potential owner to know exactly what he or she is getting him/herself into. I grew up with him and understand him quite well for what he is. I always keep that in mind when I'm around him and never give him reason to believe he can challenge me for alpha states.
