I don't drink sodas. I eat mostly vegetable and fiber cereal and fruits. But, does age have anything to do with slow weight loss?

Not directly, no.

Along with age naturally tends to come a lower metabolism, though.

Depending on what kind of fiber cereals and fruits you eat, you might be getting an ass-ton of calories from plain ol sugar.

What you should do is think about all the food you ate yesterday. Then go write down and total up the number of calories in all of it. Use this as a starting point for getting the calorie intake down.

Thank you kindly, Sire.

Truth be told, I do not know how many calories are in my portion of food. I do not eat much. Anyway, maybe I've lost some but seeing myself every day, I can't tell. Whatever. I'm exercising for my health also. So whether I lose or not, I'll be healthy.

Absolutely. Heart disease is America's #1 killer, and there's no single better way to ensure heart health than frequent exercise. Frequent exercise also staves off degenerative bone disorders, joint problems, muscle problems, etc etc etc.

actually age and how long you have held the extra weight does hold a varience on how quickly you loose the weight, but not how quickly you can improve you health.
The human body likes it fat. It doesn't like to give it up quickly, and if you've had it a while, it want's to give it up even slower.

Thanks everyone for the great discussion. I really enjoy reading you take on weight loss. I think I need to start a food diary to see how many calories I actually consume. I have lost weight but it is very slow. I know I need more exercise. Any ideas on how to keep yourself motivated? I was doing really good then hurt my shoulder and haven't got back into a schedule yet.

elmo, check out this:

link [jonnythan.com]

This is a sample of my "diary" of sorts. Just change the dates, then fill in your own weight, food, etc.

That looks really easy. Do you use one of the websites to get the calorie counts? When you started out did you post the sheet on the frig or mirror where you would see it often?

Most of the food I eat either has the calories right on the packaging (though I sometimes have to add up ingredients and so forth) or I can go to the vendor's web site and find it.

For other stuff, I use either Google or the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory which is an excellent, comprehensive resource for things like produce and meats.

And I never printed out anything from that spreadsheet. I keep it on a flash drive. Every morning when I get into work I just open the spreadsheet, put in that day's weight, and add food as I eat it.

It's Friday. I'm down 4.5 pounds from my original weight. Going for a hike in the mountains tomorrow. Signed up at calorie counter to track food intake.
