I want to know if any of you have experience in volunteering at a vet or animal shelter.

I have signed up to work at our local shelter which right now is packed with about 200 adults and over 50 kittens!!! Its amazing, we also signed up to be foster parents. Thats when a cat is pregnant and they want them to have the babies in a home instead of the shelter. You take the prego kitty home and keep her and the kittens till about 4 weeks.

They are in serious need and its a great way to give without bringing them all home myself!!

I volunteer at a Black bear refuge here in town. It's where they send bears that have been orphaned, injured. or have been fed and have loss their fear of humans. I have'nt worked there much in the past couple of months but I did hear we have a new bear cub there and I want to go see it . It's an experience that's for sure.

You'll most likely enjoy it.

I have always liked cats. I have a couple big ginger tortoiseshell tommies who live with me. Maybe I've turned into a crazy cat person. They wait and watch for me to come home from work, perched in a windowsill where they have a stragetic view of the driveway. They know which car is mine. They have their favorite spots in my study so that I'm not out of their sight. They follow me outside when I'm working in the garden. They think they're better than the barn cats who live outdoors.

Someone left a batch of 4 kittens at the end of my lane near my mailbox last summer, in a cardboard box. Which is an awful thing to do. So I did my own cat rescue work and adopted them, took them to my veterinarian friend and had the litter neutered. Now they patrol the barn and keep down the mouse population. A couple of them are really beautiful, I think they look like those ragdoll cats. They come down from the hayloft and rub on my legs until I pet each one properly. My sons' friends think that I'm some sort of a nut because I only speak to them in Swedish, and I gave them all Swedish names -- Ingrid and Bjorn, Nils and Dagmar. My sons just roll their eyes when they see me carrying my cats around in my arms like children.

Here is another really good one for all the homeless animals...Just because they didn't "Belong" to anyone was not their fault...

>^..^<

This is a prayer for little paws
All up and down the land,
Driven away, no friendly voice
Never an outstretched hand.

For weary paws of little beasts
Torn and stained with red,
And never a home and never a rest,
Till little beasts are dead.

Oh God of homeless things, look down
And try to ease the way
Of all the little weary paws
That walk the world
today.

I wonder how many animal lovers step over there fellow humans who have landed in the gutter through no fault of their own ??? How many of these get sponsored or taken home for a meal !!
Surely its a matter of priorities let alone morals,,,or maybe tunnel vision from the careing community that dosn`t care !!!

Obviously there are going to be individual differences. However, the empirical evidence suggests thatmany animal advocates are also involved in caring for humans too. For example, most are employed in the public rather than the private sector, as carers, teachers, nurses, etc.

I have been working with the owner of a large family zoo located in Upper Michigan. Yes we have about 34 big cats with 270 more animals. We also do animal rescue. Hands on with lions, tigers, bears, wolves, monkeys, gators and many others. We also have had many babies born at the zoo. Wolves, tigers! Are pens are huge. We even have a variety of snakes and other reptiles. I love our monkeys because of there human like actions.

I got the cat fostering bug when a feral cat in our neighborhood had kittens. We saw that she was pregnant but since she wouldn't come near us we just put out food and water for her. After she had the kittens we knew she moved them several times. At one point they were in the attic of our garage, then they were moved to under a low shelf in our hen-house (the cat never bothered the chickens). Finally she put the kittens in a patch of weeds behind our fence. One morning we spotted Mama-cat standing on the fence looking down at the weed patch, then she went off to hunt or something. I went out and gathered up the kittens (5 of them) so they would not grow up wild. By luck, the timing was perfect. They were just weaned so they didn't need to be bottle-fed, and too young to try to run off and hide in corners so they accepted handling easily. By the end of the first day they were snuggling up and purring at my neck. After about a month they were ready to find homes. The local "Friends of Animals" group had them fixed and put them up for adoption. They were so friendly and loving that all 5 were adopted within a week! I'm hooked now and I keep fostering. It's spring now and I expect to get a call any day about a pregnant cat or an abandoned litter that needs fostering.
