The kids went out trick or treating last night.

They took 3 yr old Layla with them for her first shot at it and before she left i explained to her what they would be doing.

Then i sat and worried for the hour they were gone.

I had just taught my baby daughter that it was ok to knock on random ppls doors and accept candy from strangers

All because its some 'special' day that means f'all to anyone except free candy..

WTF

Does anyone else see the problem here???

Now you have to explain to her that it is okay only on one day of the year while dressed in a costume with several other kids going with her or when accompanied by parents or trusted adults.

And you have to explain that she can't eat anything before you look it over and tell her it's okay.

To be honest, i tried to.

But im pretty sure her 3 yr old mind didnt get passed FREE CANDY, WOO HOO!!

Ill just have to keep the front door locked for a few months i think.

Otherwise ill find her at the neighbours house banging on the front door saying 'trick or treat' everytime i say no to candy before dinner

I saw lots of toddlers and little ones dressed up today in town. They looked so cute.

I think she is old enough to know that she had your permission. Dont fret too much about it. If we thought about every single thing we said to our kids we would go insane.

Exactly what I felt like with my children. As a parent we teach our children never to accept anything from strangers and that one day a year we actually spend money on their costumes and take them to the strangers to get the candy.

Mixed message or what?

And I don't expect many this year as the media has told parents that they can take their children out if they choose but to think of the H1N1 virus and to be very cautious with the food and about not knowing if the people giving out will have the virus or not.

WOW! Talk about putting a damper on things.

It does seem like a total contradiction and in a way it is When mine were little i made them throw away anything not in a wrapper. I had to inspect the haul before i let them loose on it.

There was one little boy tonight, it must have been about 8.30pm all on his own I told him to go home if i gave him most of the candy i had.

In our old neighbourhood, the adults all got together and made a map of all the ppl we knew combined who would be giving candy and were safe.

Each kid had a map and they were instructed to only go to the houses marked on their map.

My kids were only 9 and 11 then and i felt safe sending them out to trick or treat alone with friends while operating under these guidelines.

I never thought for a minute about the dangers of it all and i didnt worry about them while they were gone.

I wish all neighbourhoods were this family friendly..

I suppose it all depends on how street smart your kids are. Although they all think they are completely indestructible

I would like to think my kids are street smart, but reckon im kidding myself, lol

Im positive they think nothing will ever happen to them and if it did they believe they are tough enough to handle it..

Wonder is Halloween like late night shopping for pedos??
