Dakota Access Pipeline Standoff: Mni Wiconi, Water is Life.

"The controversial Dakota Access Pipeline project is back in the news. Over the weekend, tribal activists faced off against lines of police in Hunkpapa Territory near Cannon Ball as construction crews prepared to break ground for the new pipeline, while Standing Rock Sioux governmental officials resolved to broaden their legal battle to stop the project.

On July 26, 2016 the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe was stunned to learn that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had given its approval for the pipeline to run within a half-mile of the reservation without proper consultation or consent. Also, the new 1,172 mile Dakota Access Pipeline will cross Lake Oahe (formed by Oahe Dam on the Missouri) and the Missouri River as well, and disturb burial grounds and sacred sites on the tribe’s ancestral Treaty lands, according to SRST officials.

Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners will build, own and operate the proposed $3.78 billion Dakota Access Pipeline and plans to transport up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil fracked from the Bakken oil fields across four states to a market hub in Illinois. The pipeline—already facing widespread opposition by a coalition of farmers, ranchers and environmental groups—will cross 209 rivers, creeks and tributaries, according to Dakota Access, LLC."

The US government has a history of deciding when to end or violate treaties. Primarily if big business can benefit from it. Thanks to lobbyist of course.

Money always always overrides f***ing everything. Just follow the money as the old saying goes.

The desire for big companies/governments to maximise their revenue always has, and seemingly always will, trump everything else.

The problem is is that in the US government has repeatedly f***ed over the Natives when it came to land. This is well documented. The US government would move the natives around and "renegotiate" things when some kind of valuable natural resource was discovered or any other kind of "valuable' use of the land was figured out. The US government also was very subversive in Native affairs.

I'm not really proud of this, but it is what it is.

Apparently the US government have signed over 500 treaties with native peoples, primarily for land cessations. And the US government have broken, changed or nullified pretty much all of these treaties when it served their interests.

One of the saving graces here in Ca is that the voters voted in that the Natives can operate casinos some years ago and over the years they've made tens of millions of bucks on that move.

I like that part.

That's how capitalism works. Its gotten us pretty far. It may not be working anymore. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Hopefully from a distant distance.

My grandfather was half yaqui. Dont really know him, never did.

I always wondered if you as a native American feel kinship with all tribes or just your own?

Like you say ""taking back the country" which maybe is not serious but its not unserious either. Do you feel like the whole country should be yours or maybe just your ancestral lands? I think about individual tribes and thats how i see them. As individuals.

Serious question man even if it doesn't seem like it.

Standing in line behind the First Nations are the farmers and ranchers when it comes to being f#*ked by the government. We can cross our fingers and hope that ,that pipeline doesn't spring a leak in the area of any of those hundreds of waterways .

As to your "one nickel at a time" I'm a cheapskate, I play the penny machines .
