A friend of mine made some very interesting comments. He said that if you´re in the wrong place in New York, everyone will tell you politely, even the Mafia. He then said that if you´re in the wrong place in Los Angeles, you´re a sitting duck.

Could anyone living in the states please share their opinions on these remarks?

It's kinda like being straight arrow and wanderin into a gay bar in a strange neighborhood by mistake. You know it immediately.

I see.In my experiences here in Girona, if you´re in the wrong place, people will try to ignore you or show you the door. Is it fair to assume that people in every place have a different reaction?

What do you mean by "being in the wrong place"? That's kind of important.

If you're in the wrong place in Miami they'll think that you're there to buy drugs.

Let´s say you walk into a place that people consider you to be out of place in. The wrong place could mean where you stand out, for example.

Yeah...this is what I was getting at. I've been "in the wrong place" in a rural mining town and all I got was stared at.

Really, the answer entirely depends on the place and why it's the wrong one.

A place you stand out, for aesthetic, or economic reasons, shall we say? My mother suggested being in the wrong place in Los Angeles for example, is to travel in a sports car in a poor neighbourhood and get out to by goods at any store.

In London you just get glared at. In Bristol it's a bit of a free for all so it's hard to actually be in the wrong place.

After a gig once in Glasgow a mate and I where trying to find the train station to get back to Edinburgh. We took a few wrong turns and got lost, but had a general idea of where we should go (we where wrong). We eventually ended up somewhere I recognised as it wasn't far from Celtic's ground and this rather threatening looking man in full trackies went up to us and said 'You two look lost, this is the East End, it's not that safe at this time of night' and told us how to get back into town.

One of them 'don't judge a book by it's cover' style stories I guess.

Edinburgh's s*** areas are hidden away though, it would be difficult to find yourself one unless you specifically try to find them.

Where I come from if someone who 'doesn't belong', meaning not a local , comes into the bar, they are likely to get every reaction known to mankind. there will be those who give them a once over then ignore them as if they never existed, then there will be at least 2 or 4 drunks who will see just how much fun they can have at the expense of the stranger, there will be someone who has had a f***ed up day and will see the stranger as gift from the gods, they can take their frustrations out on with no chance of a whole bunch of cousins, uncles, brothers and best friends trying to revenge an a** whipping.
There will be a few who will try to take the ' fresh meat' home for a bit of' whoopie' , those that will try to buy them drinks and ones who will try to get them to buy the drinks and last but not least those who will invite them to sit and visit just for the sake of visiting with someone new.
There isn't any bad part of town here, there are several dirt roads without street signs and no lights but if a stranger is going to be kicked or kissed ,either one can happen on main street or any where.
It's really pretty entertaining to watch when some one 'who doesn't belong' shows up .

Act against those who are in the wrong place, whether it be tell them to leave or attack, do not take the middle road of passive resistance. Ignoring the person or showing them the door without words places too much emphasis on the self and not on the surroundings. Both must be utilized.
