You'll have to bear with me here. I'm not great with the correct terminology. You know when you first switch your computer on and wait for everything to load: on the right-hand side of the taskbar(the system tray bit?) bits and pieces load when I don't want them to. Is it possible to stop them from doing so because it slows everything down so much? If you understand that, you're a genius and I love you.

Go to start-Run and type "msconfig". Go to the "startup" tab, then you can uncheck or check what you want to start or not start.

Don't do the MSConfig thing yet. That's the last resort.

The proper way is to go into each program's options and attempt to disable it there.

yea, that's true. I had a program that didn't give you the option to disable. or at least I couldn't find one after searching for 30 minutes. so I did the msconfig thing and now it's just gone!

It's me again.I do know that you have to edit them out of your start-up menu-I only have my security program,my printer, imaging tool;and that's it-different things start up different computers and mine is an old beater til I get my new one but I know that it only slows you down when too many things are loading at the same time.

Hello you again, my partner-in-bewilderment. Thank you for replying. I'm terminally hopeless, aren't I?

I worked on one of the room-sized one in the 70s. It seemed simpler somehow.

When I was at secondary school you had to actually join a special club after hours just to be allowed to use the computer!

I never joined!

It can seem complicated by comparison to todays PC's but then if you want to do more than bat a pixel ball from one side of the screen to the other, complexity is the price that has to be paid.
