If you said As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive, All That Remains, Arch Enemy then kill yourself.
Instead, listen to Obituary, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Decapitated, Averse Sefira, Bolt Thrower, Celtic Frost, Exodus, Darkthrone, Deicide, Decrepit Birth, Malevolent Creation, Strapping Young Lad, Nevermore, Absu, Exhumed, Morpheus Descends, Sepultura, Necrophobic, Incantation, Dismember, Demilich, At The Gates, Monstrosity, Cryptopsy, Vader, Hate Eternal.

28/M/Nashville, Tennessee Join Date: Aug 2008 | The best metal band?
The obvious answer, which no one even mentioned once:
King Diamond / Mercyful Fate
It's like 2 bands in one. The difference is that Mercyful Fate albums have a different topic per song, and King Diamond albums are always a psychodrama telling a (horror) story from first to last song. In the end, King Diamond runs both bands.
Live performances are spectacular, and often include actors/actresses on stage voodoo dancing, wearing masks, dressing up like Grandma in a wheel chair, candles, altars, inverted pentagrams, inverted crosses, projectors with images, magic tricks, fire, skulls (human and goat), and don't forget King's microphone is attached to 2 human leg bones tied into a cross. Sometimes they even include an entire scene, such as gravestones, or old rusty graveyard gates. I've seen both bands live on multiple occassions.
King Diamond himself is eccentric. No one has ever been able to replicate his vocal style. The music always has 2 different shredders dueling solos. There are keyboards at times, including everything from harpsicords, organs, violins, chimes, you name it. The drummers always use double kick!
Further evidence:
You choose Metallica, but it looks like Metallica chooses King Diamond! Lars Ulrich played drums on Mercyful Fate's "Return of the Vampire". Metallica covered several of their songs on Garage Inc.'s "Mercyful Fate Medly." They covered it because they know King Diamond is the best.
You chose Motorhead, but it looks like Motorhead's drummer worked for King Diamond on his first 3-4 solo albums (Mikey D).
You chose Death, but once more, Andy LaRoque, the long time lead guitarist for King Diamond was in Death as well!
You chose Megadeth, but again, Glen Drover, one of Megadeth's lead guitarist also has been with King Diamond. Oh, it looks like Dave Mustaine is wearing Mercyful Fate shirts very often too.
You chose Trivium, here we go again... Both Trivium guitarists wrote music for King Diamond on RoadRunner United. The song was, "In The Fire."
You chose Pantera, of course Dimebag Darrell played a solo on King's album "Voodoo."
Sigh.. even David Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana) and King Diamond did work together!
To quote Glen Benton of Deicide/Vital Remains, "King Diamond was a band that highly influenced me into doing this."
And I have to add this last one just for the death-punch!!! Ever heard of Arch Enemy? Who do you think that is playing bass? Sharlee D'Angelo... once more, Mercyful Fate's ba** player... I think I proved my point.
I could go on and on and on. See how all the bands you chose actually work for the King himself? King Diamond/Mercyful Fate are the best.

Well, I guess one of the main problems with this discussion is that there are a hundred thousand metal bands, and 100 genres of metal. Ontop of it all, there are different eras of metal, and different technologies used to record each band. Last but not least, every listener is different. Thus, the "Best Band" is eternally SUBJECTIVE.
The only way we could somewhat know, would be to make a huge list of criteria, and then apply that list to each seperate band. Giving and taking away points as if we were olympic judges. The criteria would have to list both subjective and objective aspects of the bands. For example, we might say Metallica is the best band, simply because they sold more records than about any other band ever in metal history. That is an objective fact. But I certainly don't think the judgement should be based soley on record sales, but it's definately a factor, and should be one of the criteria.

Just because I band has worked with so many other artists and has covered many different genres of metal DOES NOT make them any good...thats like saying Velvet Revolver is the best band in the world because its a mega super-group.
