CDUCKS BEATLES TOTD
Penny Lane
There is a real Penny Lane that still exists. It is both a road and an area. Most of the things mentioned were real but the characters were mainly fiction.
It is named after a slave trader called james Penny and in 2006 a local councillor suggested they rename it because it was offensive to have a street named after someone so imoral!!
The lyrics have a big contradiction in them...the line 'selling poppies from a tray' indicate it is set around the time of rememberance day,Nov.11th, but the chorous indicates it is the height of summer!!

Thanks cduck and bor3113 for your nods to my Mom. I will relay your comments to her. She`s a young 73 now and still has a keen ear for quality music, I do find it awesome that she was around the Fab 4 before their amazing rise to Legend status, you would both love to talk to her, I`m sure.

It would be pretty amazing to talk to someone who hung around The Beatles, pre-Beatles era.

For a young person of just 15, bor3113, you show great maturity in being a fan, and thus a student of, those Beatles. Their music has turned out, as expected due to its quality, to be timeless and ageless. You are right, in every respect, in appreciating them. Good for you, you will go far. Cduck would agree too, I believe.

The First 7 Beatle albums all had 14 songs on them...all except for A Hard Days Night...
They were going to record a 14th on 3rd June 1964 but Ringo fell ill and they had to spend the day reherasing with Jimmy Nichol who was the drummer hired to replace Ringo for an upcoming foreign tour.
Ringo rejoined the band in Australia a few weeks or so later.

I didn`t know about the reshaped session on 3rd June 1964, cduck, coincidentally my maternal grandmother`s 60th birthday. That was their only Australian tour, I believe? Whenever I think about this episode in the Beatles` career, I always find it strange that Nichol never built on his career following his stint in the drum stool, as a feted Beatles "member". As you probably know, he insists his flirt with pop "superstardom" ruined his life. Doesn`t it seem odd, too, when you see film of their tour in Australia, and he`s waving like mad to the fans. Today, a "stand-in" would be asked to stay out of that adulation, a man in similar circumstances, but a whole lot happier than Nichol, is Darryl Jones, the Stones` bassist.

well i didn't know that JN had said that...i'll have to google around to find out more...but it strange he didn't use it as a platform more...and as for d.Jones being in a similar situation well NOBODY, BUT NOBODY, could be described as having been or being in a similar situtaion to the beatles circa 64-66!!!

The point was, Daz Jones plays with the Stones and isn`t an "official" member and similarly, Jimmy Nichol played with the Beatles and wasn`t an "official" member. I`m referring to individual people.

The Bealtes are a massive obsession of mine. The early songs lyrics aren't really for me but you can't beat those tunes. Thery'e all just irresistable. As for the mid-late Beatles when they just wrote about anything and were more cool and arty, well they just wrote even more delicious melodies and adorned them with interesting and often beautiful poetry.
Then they ended up hating each other and broke in a most spectaculry nasty fashion. Pity really. But they put the worst of it behind them and by the time John died were on pretty good terms.
Heres 50 reasons why i love the Beatles.
1- The 'butcher cover' for Yesterday and Today
2- They wrote a song called The word about 1967's 'summer of love' in 1965!
3-Paul invented lead ba** on Paperback writer
4-The harmony parts on Here, there and everywhere
5-They invented pop music
6-They were the most potent cultural force that helped the west win the cold war
7-They had the nerve to write Back in the U.S.S.R slap bang in the middle of the cold war
8-Ringo's drumming on A day in the life
9-John, Paul and George could be a right set of bastards therefore not commiting the crime of being boring
10-Pauls rollicking piano on Oh Darling!
11-George Martins scores
12-They made up after the acrimony of the split
13-The cover of Rubber Soul
14-George's blistering solo on I saw her standing there
15-They loved getting high...Maaan!
16-Eleanor rigby is poetry in motion
17-In my life's sentimentality not being mawkish
18-They made the Stones look like creative neanderthalls and were more controversial
19-The 'mad day out' photos
20-The moptop hair-do
21-Puttin Albert Stubbins on the cover of Sgt. Pepper just 'cause John liked the name
22-The way John looks at the camera after he says 'were not gonna vote for Ted!'on this... Clickable Text
23-Not being bothered to get out of bed to go and see Imelda Marcos
24-John's bigger than Jesus quote
25-Paul getting the bus into Apple offices
26-Their uber charismatic appearence at the end of Yellow Submarine film
27-Paul being called 'My twin soul' by Little Richard
28-John's bye-bye backing vocal on Kansas city/hey hey hey
29-Pauls lead vocal on above
30-Johns Sgt. Pepper era fancy pantaloons
31-Sacking Pete Best
32-Inventing the idea of 'the studio as an instrument'
33-The whackyness of Magical mystery tour
34-Georges 'Stamp out the Beatles' jumper
35-Ringos nose
36-Paul losing his baby fat
37-Revolution#9
38-The intro and outro chords on Eight days a week
39-Hating the original title of Help!
40-Not being overawed by how famous they were
41-Not taking themselves too seriously...Until John did circa.1969
42-Refusing to forgive Dick James for selling their songs
43-Johns books
44-Introducing the sitar to western music
45- Not over doing the sitar thing
46-The mental sarcastic way John intoduces Mr. Kite on Anthology2
47-There Sgt. Pepper moustaches
48-John's vocal on Twist and shout
49-John's psychadelic limo
50-Being far and away the best band the world has ever and will ever know!

I'm very impressed by the way you're SO obsessed with The Beatles. I love them too. But I can not give 50 reasons why I love them.

Yeah...it's one of my fav. books. but only the song by song analysis...the essays' are too intelectual! I think he's got some interesting points in the things he critsies but i don't agree. He totally trashes Across the universe, helter skelter and maxwell's silver hammer.
One of the eye-opening things about reading it is that you get the impression the Beatles nicked a lot of ideas and plagurised a lot!!
The author killed himself!!

Very fair comment, cduck, that is. Yeh, even Paul in interviews I`ve seen, admitted he and John borrowed a stack in the early days. I drew my own conclusion that their bright vocal harmonies are reminiscent of the Everly Brothers. Yet the Beatles as a unit always put their own "stamp" on anything they recorded and of course, sounded totally fresh and original, which is still true and will always remain the case. I heard Paul Weller once say that no-one has a monopoly on chords and notes....
Ian McDonald, the author, bases his criticisms on a personal opinion, I would say and like you, I can`t agree with a lot of them. I was quite shocked when he took his own life a few years back, too.

CDUCKS BEATLE TOTD
The most expensive Beatle memorabillia is John Lennon's Rolls-Royce. In fact it's the most expensive ever rock memorabillia!
The 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V limousine was used during touring and came with psychedelic paintwork, selling for a record sum of £1,768,462 in NYC's Sotheby's on June 29, 1985.
