I am torn on this topic.

It was a terrible thing that these kids did, they should be punished, severly, but I dont know if death would be the answer.

I am a thirty odd year old rock fan who has now got short hair. The abuse I suffered from scum like these boys was constant at school and I sympathise with the Goths of today.

Now I see kids like these two picking on anyone who is different and in some cases the same but of rival gangs. Why are these kids doing this? Perhaps we need to be looking at what the hell were doing in our society that allows this.

I think what enrages me about this case was that the girl and boy who were assaulted were doing nothing wrong, they were not picking a fight, they just talked to some other kids in their play park.

Punishment? I wish we could make these little scum bags see what they have done, the damage they have caused. But instead they will live for 18 years or so in a relativley comfortable enviroment and come out hardened criminals. Now that is the tragedy here that poor girl died for nothing!

18 years in prison is quite a severe punishment, its what they deserve, not death.

This entire thread is a depressing commentary on how hateful and right-wing so many UK citizens are.

I mean, are people actually serious when they say the offenders should be killed? Hanged, even?

I thought Cumbrians were backwards, turns out the rest of the country is as well.

As I've said before, not all cases are so clear-cut. If you can't be absolutely 100% sure that someone commited the murder and that forensic evidence won't, in say 5-10 years, prove said innocence, then how can you allow them to be killed for it? Also, it's taking away human rights. I know I always say that criminals should lose some human rights when they commit the crime, I usually don't include the right to life. humanrightsact1998

And also, most people don't realise how much damage a couple of kicks to the head can actually do, especially if they're in a frenzy and didn't pay attention in biology

i dont think prisons hard enough on people at all. it should be a s**thouse conditions making you not want to go back at all rather than the nice clean, 3 meals a day, tv to a room place it actually is. HMP ritz comes to mind
