You could go for a Mitsubishi FTO, small car about the size of a Mazda MX5 (I think it might be known as the Mazda Eunos in the US) but it's got a V6 engine

Get the scion TC those things are awesome they are fast and sporty but they are also good on gas and they have room for the dogs my cousin bought one and he loves it. It has room for the animals, his G.F., and anything else you need to carry they also look really good fixed up.

Chevy Cobalt SS, then?

I'd recommend an Impreza or WRX, but while reliability is OK on them, quality isn't.

They quit making the Cobalt SS

When they cease production on a certain model of car, they don't go back and destroy all the old ones

They stopped making the "SS" trim line.

The high performance ones are called the Sport Coupes or something now.

And by the way, those Ecotec engines are pretty bitchin'. Highly reliable and fuel efficient. And the 5-speed trannies are Italian-made Getrag transmissions. Quality stuff.

NOOOOOOOO FORD!!!!! GARBAGE. RUBBISH!
I will probably get flamed for this, but don't buy American! However much you spend for an American car, for the same price you can get something foreign that is much better quality and will last you much longer!
I thought about a mini or an Evo, but in the end I ended up buying a Subaru Legacy Spec B. I don't know if you know how to drive a manual, but it is the best car I have ever had (and my first manual). I LOVE it. Subaru is extremely reliable, and it is a fast little car. It has basically the same engine as the WRX STi. Doesn't get great gas milage, but isn't horrible either. It is also all wheel drive so it is great for my Michigan winters.
It is also very luxurious with heated leather seats, navigation, HUGE trunk with fold down back seats, moon roof etc for under $40K.
And my Subaru would smoke your would-be-Mustang any day of the week!

Used to be true.

Not true anymore.

Modern GM, and, yes, even Ford cars are ranked side by side with Toyota and Honda these days in terms of reliability and initial quality. Toyota in particular has been falling off, with some missteps on Camrys lately.

And Chrysler/Dodge both offer lifetime powertrain warranties on all new vehicles. Can't beat that with a stick.

These days, I'd take a Chevy Cobalt or Pontiac G5 over a WRX or Lancer any day of the week. Five, ten years ago it was a totally different story, but things change.

Well, I'm just speaking from personal experience, because anyone I know with a Ford, even a newer one has had nothing but problems with it.
And the G5 is just a different name for the Grand Am. Been there. Done that. Not that great. I've driven the G6 as well. Not nearly as fun to drive as my Subaru!

Also driven the Avenger and the Charger. They both sucked. I rent a different car every week, so I get extended test drives on most new '08s. They might be ok for reliability, but I believe vizzy was also looking for something fun. Which those weren't! lol

Er, enginere is right. I mixed up the numbers. The G6 is the Grand Am successor. It's a thoroughly different platform with a different tranny and different engine.
