haha, just to be the odd one out
i won't lie, i have yet to find another afrikaans person on a forum
it sounds similiar to german when spoken but who knows... maybe you can understand what i say... lets' see

yes 'af' is kinda a useless word we just put in

the last two lines read:

"it's very hot here and we have a lot of power failures
how are things over there?"

something along those lines at least

haha yah 'krag' is our word for electricity... something our country doesn't have right now.. bastards... so we're sitting in the dark most of the time.. not fun haha...

That makes sense. It sounds similar to German "krieg" for lightning, or "kraft" for power.

haha you got the part right about him saying he can speak it, the last bit was just 'but not that well' and then of course the whole thing about doing it at school

you got the first few lines i said to devonr, then i just asked if it's still compulsary at school to do afrikaans and then 'shame, you probably dont like that'

My best friends mum is south african, and she doesnt sound the slightest bit German.

She does sound really harsh, I think without meaning to. I can make a bean soup and chocolate cake in afrikaans
