| sister_of_mercy Twinky+ ![]() London, United Kingdom | #1 My psychology lecture today was quite interesting and got me thinking about the influences of behaviour. Just wondering whether you think behaviour is influenced by the situation a person is under or whether it's just down to their 'virtues' (i.e. personality traits that are consistent on a global scale), or whether it's a bit of both? | ||

It is determined early on, and certainly newborns have a temperament of their own, but the environment during the early years definitely has an effect. Then I believe that personality affects how you react to situations, but situations also start to change your personality.Definitely certain circumstances harden a person, reduce the ability to trust, etc. | ||

| Electric_Banana Points Whore Master+ ![]() Don't know, New Zealand | #3 No matter how a person is raised or despite there base persona, the rose tints eventually get b****-slapped off their face. Behavior and response are mostly molded from the environment. For instance you start off in life with an innocent desire for apples but after years and years of being served bad ones eventually when you are asked "How do you like these apples?" your reply ends up being "No, thank you, I'd rather not bother with them at all." And so behavior and response has gone from thankfully accepting the apple in eager anticipation to walking past and laughing at the person offering it. | |||

| annski729 Giant Donkey+ ![]() Washington, District of Columb | #4 Both. That's been more or less established by the field The same person will act differently in different situations (e.g. at a sports game vs. in a classroom) but their personality largely remains stable throughout the life span. That being said, people tend to react remarkably similarly in the same types of situation. Social psych studies the influences of the situation, and I have always found it much more fascinating than personality psych. Personality psych was boring | ||
