If I were gay I'm not so sure I'd be hip to the idea of doing something that has it's roots in religion anyway. I mean, why not have make civil unions legal and leave "marriage" to those who wish to incorporate a religious tone to their union. I know a few religious people who would rather never have their unions recognized by the state because what they did was spiritual. They actually do want to keep the state out of their religion.

marriage isn't a soley religious tradition.
its an important social process.

its important to have marriage recognised by the state it comes with alot of responibility, although the church is perfectly entitled in my eyes not to allow gay marriage, the state should be obliged to recognise any two people joining their lives socially and economically.

you can call it a civil union if your worried about the semantics of the word marriage but it needs to come with the exact same rights as you get with marriage.

Sure, I see what you're saying. I just think had I to do it over, I'd marry my husband in a spiritual sense and leave the legalities of it out. I know that sounds silly to some, but if you have a will and all your papers in order, no one is going to get screwed. There's taxes, I know. but meh.
I'm sure I'm missing something. Other than taxes there must be some other reason people so want their unions to be legal.

for one its very much important for children,
and for gay couples were they to adopt.

wills can be contested and you have much better standing if you're married. and the tax issue is a big one, it leads to lots of other issues.

Why is marriage being legal rather than spiritual important to children? A will, done properly, expecially if the partners have been together for many years, aren't that easily voided. So I'm back to taxes. Which still doesn't seem like a big enough issue to get people so worked up.

Adoption.

Power of attorney/next-of-kin status for medical decisions, etc. If there's a gay couple that has been together for 35 years continuously and monogamously, they are not considered family and are not allowed to take part in medical decisions.

Tax breaks.

Joint insurance policies, leases, etc.

Immigration and residency for partners from other countries.

Right to pensions, social security, etc.

Inheritence (there is none if you're not married.)

Wrongful death benefits.

etc etc:

It's not important to children.

It's important to adopting children.

And you can't leave children to someone unrelated to you and not part of your family (ie, a gay partner) via a will AFAIK.,

Really? I didnt' realize that. So what if a parent doesn't have any family? How do they go about making sure their child is taken care of by the person they choose?

And to clarify...I'm not saying gay people shouldn't be allowed to marry. Only that I didn't understand why it was such an issue when I've been talking with straights who'd prefer to leave the state out of it.

I believe they usually go to the other parent, another close family member, or into the foster care system.

You can't bequeath your child to an unrelated person. I don't think you can, at least. In any case, an unmarried couple or single parent isn't generally allowed to adopt in the first place.

That is so wrong. A parent should have the right to have their child taken care of by the person THEY see as most fit. That's bulls**t.

whoa, you cant? I'm not to sure on this whole legalize gay marriage thing, but when my mom died she left my little sister to my father, and they are in no way related. All of this was done legally of course.

Hm, maybe you can. I'm having trouble finding good info here.

Was your mom married to your father when she died?

What happens if you bequeath custody of a child to someone who doesn't want it?

No they were never married. (I'm a bastard! }

I don't know what would happen if you bequeath custody of your child to someone who doesn't want it, I assume the child would be placed into foster care, as I am reasonably sure you cant force someone to raise a child even if it's there own.

I would think any rational parent would discuss that at great length with the person they intended to leave the child with. Man, I would hope so anyway! Not the kind of thing you spring on someone.

I don't mean to detract from the point, but I really struggle to understand how people in this day an age could possibly be opposed to gay couples having different rights to straight couples.

Even from a religious view, isn't God supposed to be all loving. Therefore, would God not want to bless the love of two people, be they man and woman, man and man or woman and woman?

Surely the love of two people is more special than all these petty views of "Marriage being between a man and woman only".
