In the next few weeks I'm going to be starting work on a case study on body modification, of which my main focus is "scarfication: art or self harm?" and I need to get opinions from people.

So I thought where better than TFS?

Would the good people of TFS kindly help me out with my case study and answer this for me:

Do you think that scarification can be classed as an art form, or is it too extreme and simply a form of self-mutilation?

Any opinions are really valuable to my work and thank you so much to anyone that responds

I love it. Its really much deeper emotionally than tattoes. plus it can really cover up some nasty self harm.

I think it's an art form.

Yeah, its an old old body modification.

In my opinion it is an art form.

Having said that people can become addicted to body modification. I wonder if this is because like most artists they feel that their work can be endlessly improved, its just knowing when to stop before you spoil it completely.

Its none of my business if a person wishes to use their body as a canvas.

im planning on getting body mod of some kind in the new year, i want a brand or scarification, undecided yet. people get suspended by hooks, some pierced, some tattoos, all of these have different things for different people.
i want my body mod because i did the piercings and tattoos and it's another way i can express myself. i'm not into self harm, and some of the work looks absolutly fantastic when it's done.
body harm is random marks or ways of hurting yourself, these are designs, personal to the individual.

I think it's sick Frankly it must take a disturbed mind to want to do that to yourself. It is certainly not an art form.
Try justifying the self harming to cause your body to try to repair itself badly to cause a visual effect.

As wrong as I think it is, that really is rather clever and quite pretty.

IMO, it's as much as a way of self expression and art as tattoos. Some are very beautiful. I myself wouldn't get it done, but kudos for those that can go through with it.

Anything which is done for purely aesthetic reasons can be classed as an art form.
