There's a can and a half of worms.

IMO, for that price range, you should be looking at the Canon Rebel XT body ($410 or so) plus the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS lens (not the "kit" EF-S 18-55mm II lens) for another $175.

The EF-S 18-55mm IS lens is much, much sharper than the "kit" lens, and the addition of Image Stabilization greatly enhances your shooting ability in less-than-perfect lighting.

A canon or a nikon, I would say. Perhaps look for second hand as people often upgrade.

It depends on a number of things.

Mainly what are you going to be using it for?
Do you prefere a certain make?
Are you going to need many lenses?
