This is by far one of the biggest things the Australian government has done for years.

I'm intensely impressed by their actions.

Aussies, what do you think of the speech?
For better or for worse?
How do you think Rudd handled it?

I think it is great, and I'm glad to hear that he did indeed use the term "sorry" the promised three times.

The boycott by some of the liberal backbenchers is very interesting.

Wankers.

I liked how the liberals are supporting the sorry vote now, when their arse
isn't on the line.

Australian politics is really interesting at the moment.

I think it's great that the apology was finally forthcoming, and hope that it signals a sucession of forward thinking motions by labor.

I'll have to say that a government doing the right thing is a refreshing change.

I would not put it down as a "success" or anything like that, simply because it would just reduce it to nothing but a political stunt.

Maybe I'm getting old and getting soft in the head, but it would be great for everyone if they took it as something long overdue and something which injected humanity into the political process which in recent times has degenerated into a dehumanisingly horrible farce where the right thing is throw aside just to ensure some kind of agenda is forwarded.

Maybe there is hope for the world after all.

The speech made me cry. Its about time our govt stepped up and reconised wha previous generations have done and inflicted on the indiginous australians.

I'll throw a spanner in the works about this 'Sorry' rubbish.

I call it rubbish because I fail to see how it is anything other than a political stunt and one identified by the Labor Party as a vote getter.

Now before you jump the gun and call me a racist go and look up the word. Just because I question an issue does not make me a racist. And if that is the only retort that you have, then don't waste your time commenting.

My question is; What is the point of saying sorry? How will it help the Aboriginal men, women and children who are 'so' affected by all manner of problems, some beyond their control and some within their control, have a better life?

the point of saying sorry to the stolen generation is acknowledgement that it happened past governments have refused to do this the rudd government has at least given those still alive and their decendents a point in history to commencr the healing process of the horrible things that happened to them. i'm a white australian and if every australian took the time to learn our true history not just the version the government has been feeding us then we would have a better understanding of what these people went through whilst it may not change the anti social behavior of some indigenous people hopefully we have started a way for future generations to live in harmony with a greater espect for all australians regardless of color or origin

A bit puzzled how you can call it rubbish when a more enlightned and educated society recognizes the wrongs from previous generations?
The indigenous population have a well documented history of cruelty and abuse and this is the first time anyone has stood up and apologised for it.
Think yourself grateful mate that you weren't one of the Aboriginals
who were around at that time.

I suppose being 108 means that you were around and can speak from first hand knowledge?

I can tell you from first hand experience that Aboriginals have meted out more cruelty and harm on themselves than any other section of the community.

Why should and what does it achieve to say sorry when there are hundreds of cases where Aboriginal children could and should be removed from their parents/guardians as we speak. The unfortunate thing is that because they are Aboriginal and because of this whole 'Sorry' thing, means that those children will continue to suffer. Why? Because those in authority are too worried about what people will think if they do. What are people like yourself going to say to this generation of children when they grow up and ask why nothing was done when they were being abused?
