I'm doing background reading to put on my University application -- I mean, because I really love literature ... I've been recommended to read some Greek mythology, and I'm not sure how to go about that.

Can someone recommend a smaller tome of Greek mythology? Or suggest how I'd find such a book? ^^; This is probably a stupid question and it's probably no different to finding any other book, but it feels like it's much more difficult.

Any help is much appreciated!

The best way to read it is to watch the movie.

Aha...! I see you are much experienced in the ways of loopholes in academics, raditz.

But I might be expected to speak about books on my application at interview, so I'd probably better read 'em.

---

Oh. Right. ^^ That WOULD make sense. Thanks very much. Any recommended titles?

Mythology: timeless tales of gods and myths by Edith Hamilton.

It a small refernce of all the basic myths and gods of the Greeks and Romans, it has charts in the back, along with the stories. The table of contents and the index are excellent. there is even a small section on the basic Norse myths. It usually a paperback, and small great for an introduction, and for keeping as a reference for futher study.

I recommend buying it as reference to keep though your university years, it will come in handy when you need to look something up quickly.

Try some of the Greek plays too. Oedipus Rex, Medea, and Prometheus Bound. They are good and some of my favorites. Oedipus is probably one of the most well known. I think you should get some kind of Mythology book and read through them. There are some that are most notable. I took classes and read text books. If you have any questions or discussion, ask away!

No it's not that difficult, it's translated into English. It can be poetic at times. (sometimes reading aloud can help) They usually have footnotes if something needs further explanation. Once you learn key characters it gets easier to understand.

Try the book Tiger suggested. Browse or read through that to learn basics then start reading the epics (the Iliad, Aeneid, The Odyssey) or the plays. Use that book as a guide of characters if you get or confused.

I knew it'd be in English, but I was worried it would be overly complicated. I'm glad to hear it won't be necessarily...

Goggle (or Ask or Yahoo) Bulfinch Mythology. The complete text is online. According to Gramps he learned about Greek Mythology by reading all the articles in the World Book Encyclopedia.
