For those of you who have studied psychology before, have you heard of an experiment whih involved a 5 year old (boy?) who self harmed?

The experimenters tried to alter his cognition by using acid on him as a punishment with a view to see what effect the punishment would have on his self harm. I am struggling to find anything online about this case and wondered if it really exists?

Our task was to decide if we believed the said experiments were real or fake... but we believe that thye are all real and this one was thrown in to try and make us wobbly but it was still real none the less. as i say i cant find details of the experiment, can anybody shed any light on it for me?

it was a task set by the tutor. these high profile experiments are usually pubished plus this is about how the ethical codes have been breached and given this particualr case a multitude of rules were not jsut broken but smashed! hmmm maybe it didnt happen thats why i cant find it

Couldn't find anything...I would imagine it is not true though, simply because it sounds to be too 'out there'; and inhumane.

I think if it were a true case, you would be able to find 'something' about it.

thats what i thought. im researching the top unethical experiments at the moment. too far out there things have happened though- cases such as monkeys trained to inject themseves with cocaine, amphet and codine hallucinated so badly thye ripped their own fingers off.

to me a hugely horrific one was that reproducing Miglrams experiemnt of who would deliver up to 450 volt shocks when they thought the participant was actually recieveing the shocks. the recreation was done but a proper 'victim' was used... puppys. 20 out of 26 people killed the puppy . who would have thought this would have been allowed

we just dont know if this experiment took place in some sort of institution perhapy centureis ago.. i just have a feeling this really happened but im not sure why i feel so strongly about it!

Never heard of the particular experiment you are referring to. Pretty sure I would have heard of that one somewhere along the way as we definitely covered unethical experimentation.

that is what we are sjut doing now, only had one class so far so it was something we were just supposed to do in class but for the final few we could do for homework.

i have spent a few hours researchig this and still not found anything so unless it was carried out in some sort of institution in a different age and some country not close by... maybe it really was faked. at least ive got a lot more understanding about the unethicahl experiments if nothing else!!

what course is it you are studying?

I have never heard of this experiment either. And it does sound too farfetched to be true. Guess you have to go with the best answer (T/F) as a result of your research and our excellent input. Those that post here, of course, are
superb scholars!

Feel free to post other things of interest that surface
during your courses. Many of us will gladly share our
'2-cents' worth!

well i have to say with everybodys much appreciated input combined with a days worh or trawling online to research it, i must conclude this was not an experiment that was conducted! i have earned my blinding headache today!

i imagine there will be a lot of stuff i will post here to share i might also request help with some research questionaires whenever i start to create those too- a great medium to reach a large audience!
