Hello...as a professional keyboardist onstage for many years, I find your questions very interesting. I have been onstage since the age of 9 years, and I am 59 years as of this date. I have performed all over the West Coast, and Central America, and am about to embark on a career in the UK. So, I have some thoughts on your ideas...
A performer is a person, totally and unconditionally dedicated to their particular art form, for which they will always put it first, even to the point of great personal loss. My art is music, and I have given up relationships, job security in other fields, and things that most people would consider their just due. I chose a life, from a very young age, of sharing my love of music with an audience, and nothing else could sway me from that choice. A performer is addicted to his/her art form.
An audience is anyone who will listen or pay attention to what the artist lays in front of them, be it one single person, or a crowd of thousands. It doesn't matter to the artist, but it is especially sweet to have an audience that responds. To reap the fruits of 'no reaction' to any artist, is like a slow death. Art is a give/take relationship, and it cannot be otherwise. An audience is a crucial part of the growing process that every artist craves. Constructive criticism is how any artist learns how to improve the quality of their work.
A performance is the act of an artist giving of themselves and their chosen form of art, be it music, painting, acting, comedy, sports, and the list goes on. What each person does in their life, if they throw their hearts and souls into their efforts, it becomes a performance. It doesn't matter the form that effort takes, it does matter if it is done with the heart and soul, and that makes it a 'performance'.
Thank you for listening. I hope some of these notes from a stranger will help you, in some small way, and I enjoyed my time here...
