Hi guys,

Just a quick one. I am looking into becoming a Paramedic - looked on the NHS website which isn't very helpful, ideally would like to hear from a current paramedic who could advise me?

Thanks in advance.

I'm an EMT basic..not a paramedic.

its fun and a thrill. you have to work hard and be prepared to see some toughm horrible things. You're going to be working with dying people of all ages, even kids. you're going to see a lot more then the average person wants to see. So you have to make sure your mentally prepared for it. It's also a lot of knowdledge. To be a paramedic you have to remember a lot of medications that you can give, assist and not give. You have to be prepared for that kind of job. If you are, then you'll have a lot of fun and its an adrenanline rush not knowing what you'll be doing, who you'll be saving and what you'll see.

One of my mates from college was looking into it.

There are actually tons of places you can go to Medic School.

My hubby was an EMT-3 in California and worked for the Ventura County Fire Dept. It was GREAT! He worked 24 hour shifts and in reality only worked about 14 days a month!

He was going to finish his schooling to become an EMT-4 also known as a Paramedic but decided to SHIFT gears and went on to get his degree in Homeland Security and is now on the S.R.T (Spec Response Team) team as a C.O. in Colorado. He loves it and that is what matters!

This was because our move from Ca to Co did not give him a place on the Fire Dept team and that played into him not continuing with Medic School.

He really enjoyed it though. It was tough at times when there were accidents involving children with him being a dad and all.

But, no matter what he saw he loved it. He still works events sometimes to help out and keep his certificate valid. Good Luck!

hey..im an ambulance tecnician, working my way to becoming a paramedic..you now dont have to go to uni,you can learn alongside a paramedic..you need a good general education,5 gcse's and a basic knowledge of first aid..some common sense and a general caring attitude..you need a full clean driving licence..all training is given through the ambulance service..i did a 12 week initial course which tests your basic knowledge and gives you some understanding on the job..you have to train for a year before you qualify as a tech then you have to be a tecnician for about 2 yrs before going on to do your paramedic degree..although you can just remain as a tech if you want..hope this helps and feel free to pm me if you need any more advice/help/information...louise
