This may seem very unimportant and it may be somewhat! But I've the obsessive habit of teeth grinding, till my teeth and gums hurt. The question is, how have you broken habits like these? ... Is it will power alone?

i've done that in the past, grinding my jaw.
as a kid i had an obsession with counting things.

i overcame them though, pretty much with just will power, its hard but if you can control your jaw, just be conciously aware of it when you do it and stop, it feels really weird at first since there's such a strong compulsion but keep it up and you won't do it automatically after awhile.

The main part of breaking any habit does seem to be willpower.

However .. I read an article in one of those Sunday supplements that suggested if you can abstain from whatever it is that you do habittually for just 16 days then you have a good chance of breaking that habit permanently.

I have been grinding my teeth for as long as I can remember, for me I do it only at night while asleep.

Dentist and Doctor told me it was my body's way of relieving my stress. My Dentist made up a real expensive guard so I wouldn't chip or crack my teeth, but when I wake up in the morning I find them nicely put away in it's container.

So no need to say the guard is of no use to me whatsoever. I haven't used it in years, no point.

Yep!! I believe you I have cracked my teeth, and have gone through 2 guards. I'm now on a customized one that molds to my upper teeth, but I guess during the night I must take it off and put it in it's container by the bed. And night grinding is due to stress.

The one I broke cost me $600...I'm not anxious to pay out that kind of money again just to break it

And my crappy dental insurance won't pay for the stupid thing. (My dental insurance SUCKS).

I'm glad that yours works (when you don't take it out in your sleep) I have PLENTY of stress, that's for sure!

I use to count things a lot too when I was younger. I thought it was just me. I still catch myself doing it every once in a while.
