I had a weird dream last night which involved me being in a huge-ass skyscraper...

Anyways, that reminded me that while I was in the States, I noticed that all the skyscrapers I went in had no 13th floor.

Does anyone know why this is?

Is is superstition or something else?

I figured architecture would be the best place to put this...

***By the way, I understand that there is obviously going to BE a 13th floor, I'm just curious to know why it skips from the 12th floor to the 14th floor.

It is because of a superstition, because they feel that the number 13 is unlucky

Yeah I have noticed this too. Apparently it's because of the whole unlucky number 13 superstition.

Really? How silly

I know there's no 13th carriage thingy on the London Eye, because people wouldn't get in it

It is because of superstition. There is a certain unlucky stigma attached to the number 13, and not many businesses want to be associated with it.

Nor do many people want to live on "lucky 13".

I've always lived in the apt with a 13 in it or address, Our house is plot 13 in the subdivision, of course I was born on friday the 13th, so its not scary to me. Come to think of it the apartments and stuff have always been open when I wanted though...

But yeah, its all superstition. Most buildings either skip the number or use the floor for none public areas

I agree with DiscordTiger the 13th can be lucky. I got my first joint bank account with my wife on a Friday 13th. It poured with rain that day, I remember it well. I've never lived at a number 13. We all have had 13th birthdays! It's time to change and make the 13th lucky. Don't golfers have a 13th tee?

I agree with both of you. I don't read too much into superstition, but the rest of the world does. That's what worries me.

It's kind of like the "Friday the 13th" phenomena: People that I know don't go out that night because there are supposedly crazy people out at that time.

I think that is true to some extent though. Many people get worked up into a frenzy about it.

This is an interesting article on the 'unluckiness" of the 13th floor. Supposedly something like 85% of all high rise buildings don't have a 13th floor - not only because it is unlucky to build, but hard to sell or lease space on a 13th floor too.

Firefighters hate this omission as during an emergency when they have to count floors, they have to find out whether there even was a 13th floor when they factor their stairwell counts.

Which ironically may make it more unlucky to omit the 13th floor in the first place.

Some hospitals avoid having wards with the number 13.
