It's a job opportunity coming up and I'd rather get feeedback from people who know the place rather than just read publicity blurb on the net.

Rio Rancho is the fastest growing city in New Mexico. It is the home Of Intel, maker of the pentium chips. When I first remember Rio Rancho,it had less than 10,000 population. Now I think it is approximately 75,000.A lot of people who live in Rio Rancho work in Albuquerque and vice versa due to it's proximity.

Rio Rancho is probably the fastest growing city in New Mexico. It's right next to Albuquerque. The metro area is about 800k+ people.

Rio Rancho is popular due the a pretty low cost of living and pretty low crime. Intel has a chip manufacturing plant there, Hewlett Packard is in the process of opening a service center of some sort there.

If you plan on buying a house, make sure you don't just buy empty land. They sold lots to people via Reader's Digest in the 1960s, many of which still do not have access to utilities. If you do buy empty land, make sure it is in close proximity to existing developments and has utilities readily available. All the other rules of buying a house apply, get a home inspection, etc. Many of the houses were built during a time when they used a certain type of pipe that they no longer use because it corrodes easily and could lead to property damage.

It's a desert climate so it's going to be hot and dry and watering restrictions might be in effect.

Rio Rancho is popular with families. There are great views of the mountains from Rio Rancho. Rio Rancho is mostly focused on residential and has mostly been built in the last 30-40 years. They are working on a "city center" that is actually outside most existing development, but is at the geographic center of town.

I could probably give you more information if there's any specific questions you have, or can say any particular likes/dislikes you have about where you want to live.

I have a friend who just moved to Reno from Rio Rancho. She really liked it because of the low cost of living, and the low crime rate compared to Albuquerque. I guess her parents are from the area and they had a lot of problems until they moved there.

Hi,
Charlie was actually asking about Rio Rancho for me, I've been offered a position in the new HP site, but know very little about the area.
If I listed all the questions I have we'd be here all day, I've only really started looking into the move, and HP havent really provided any info yet.

I suppose the main questions would be:

Whats the nightlife like?
Who do you think is the best phone/internet/cable provider(s)?
Whats the cell coverage like?
(all the basics for a single man )

Any info on Rio Rancho would be really helpful, though, Moving from the UK is going to be big change.
At the minute im just trying to work out if i can even afford it.

Nightlife will be best in Albuquerque, which is pretty close by car. You'll probably like the Nob Hill or downtown areas of Albuquerque the best. You'll probably have to either commute from Albuquerque to your job, or from Rio Rancho to good nightlife.

Cable/high speed internet would be comcast I believe. Home phone service is Qwest unless you want VOIP then choose whoever you want.

Cell coverage is good throughout the region. I'd go with either Verizon or T-Mobile.

DiscordTiger might have better information about Rio Rancho, but I think she's away from TFS for a while.

nightlife... in rio rancho almost non existent there are some bars, but they are more like cheers than dance clubs. all the "good" stuff is in alb. Im not a big bar hopper, but I hear a lot of them are nice, downtown alb is the place to find that stuff.

Phone is quest, cable is Cable One or you can get satellite. (we have the cable full package and internet) Internet you can get through the phone co or though the cable company, both have packages.

Cell coverage is pretty good. Im up by the City center, and star arena. and HP building. (I can see it from the hill my back yard)
A lot of people in the area depend on the cell coverage as their only phone service. There are even whole subdivisions that were built without land phone lines installed.

a bunch of new homes are coming up in the city center area , as its mostly open land now, most are starting in the $140,000's according to the signs. I would assume that would be 2 or 3 bedroom on a decent sized yard as those are typical for the area. I haven't checked apartment rents in the area too closely, as had our house built, but i think they are starting the $600 range.

You will need a car out here, there is no public transport, like busses, Alb. has a bus system, but it doesn't run 24hrs. so you could not use it to go bar hoping. To give you an idea the HP building to downtown alb is going to be about 25-30 miles. A motorcycle would be ok, but walking or bicycling might be too hard, though there are a lot of bike trails if you are into that for recreation.

If there is anything else feel free to ask. I should be around.

Thanks Discord,

With the money HP are offering and hopefully 3 of us moving out, im hoping it wont be long til i get out there now. (will have to wait for visa clearence first)

For me small bars are better than clubs, no club ever matches to the first one i ever went too (and kept going to every weekend til they sold it to a church)

We are actually hoping to be able to get somewhere up near the HP building too, the other two guys dont drive yet, and im not going to be a personal taxi driver

From what i've seen appartments go from around $600 up, but havent decided yet, with 3 of us sharing we may rent an apartment or possibly a house, nothings going to be decided til we get there.

Thanks again
K
